Hey Mike,
There should be some balsa wood triangles in the kit that you can glue against the sides of that wood tray for strength. You may have to file down a bit to get the wire side of the servo to slip in after gluing but that's pretty easy
Do you see those triangle blocks?

I decided to use the in-wing slots. Others have had failures of the removable trays...the screw holes are too close to the edge of the wood and the face of the tray is really not strong enough for the torque of 300+ oz/in servos.

I did the same thing for the same reasons.
