IMAC The new Dalton 300 SP / 330

Just got back from Visiting English Auto Paint. Wanted to try something different on this one. In the past 5 kits I have put together, I have always used Klass Kote two part Epoxy Paint. Nate, from Klass Kote is a great guy. And he is available for questions, via Email, seems to me, like 24 x 7.
I am comfortable with the paint, and have had great results from it. But, I wanted to try a different system, only to be able to support a local paint store, and thus, my community. Another advantage was to see the turn around time. With Klass Kote, if you send a paint sample, it can take up to 2 weeks to receive the paint.

SO here we go....

SO far, I am not so happy, i left the paint store feeling like I will not be able to sit down for a few hours. What you see cost me about 160 dollars!

I brought them two samples of the colors, which were already adhered to a block of balsa, as I wanted them, to be able to match it as well as possible.

I have heard, from others, that this system can sometimes not be a good match.

In any event, I am taking a huge risk.

SO, i waited 30 minutes, and left with the paint. That part, was good.

This paint is a 3 part paint, and it dries fast. It is a poly-urethane based paint, and it is mixed at a ratio of 6:1:1

They claim it is very strong and durable. In any event, once I got the paint, and they told me how much I owed them (my mouth dropped), i then stated, "you sure this will match?"

They replied yes!

I told them I will be back!

In any event, If i had gone with Nate, the total cost for me for the paint would be under 60 dollars.

Yeah, automotive paint is very expensive. So, after the paint dried and taking the parts out into the sun how does the color match?

Welcome to my world where a pint of basecoat can be $100 or more. A long way from the $17 pints when I started in the body shop business. You can thank the EPA and greed.;)

Have not painted just yet. Maybe next week I will do it. You know I will post pictures!!!

O'boy I am at the same cross roads you are. Running around trying to get paint for my Viper that I am building. Using Ultracoat Orange, Midnight Blue and white. Looks like I will go Klass Coat or to the local house paint store and have the colour matched. If anyone has any suggestions it will be appreciated. Thanks.

Oh man!! I am stoked! This paint is awesome! Sprays much better than the other paint I have used in the past. Sorry KK.

Check this out....

It is called a single stage paint, meaning, mix all 3, and apply two coats, and you are done. The 1st coat is light, and the second one is medium. No buffing or clear coat required. Less likely to run as well. No solvent pops either!

I am sure the outside temp being 90 F helps big time.

The time to touching it and no stick was 45 minutes. AT 30 minutes, i removed the tape.

I have already painted the top cowl orange. This was just placed so I can mark out where to cover the white.

The front edge of the top cowl will be blue.

I will finish off the blue tomorrow.

I am also impressed by the Orange matching the Monokote pretty darn good too!

Just went and pulled the tape from the top cowl, after spraying the orange over the white.

Here is the match of the orange paint with the orange Monokote,

I would say it is a near perfect match. These guys did a good job at the old English Auto Paint store.

Tomorrow, I will finish off the blue.
