Ignition Wiring

As a lot of you know, I am an electric guy. I like electric, understand it and can troubleshoot and work on it.

BUT, as I move up in IMAC I would like to build a 105" AJ Laser and power it with gas, so that I can fly2 sequences and have more practice time in the air.

I have read a lot about IBEC (mostly Techaero) and opti kills (mostly with mechanical switches). Is there a best of both worlds?

Question: I want to power my ignition with a dedicated lipo or life batt, into a kill switch that is switched from the receiver/power box (I will use a CB200). I will have a lockable ignition switch on my DS-16. I attached a sketch of what I want to do. Does this animal exist?

Opinions? Best practices? (Yes, I am an engineer)

I use Powerbox Spark Switches. I run a Li-Ion straight into the Spark Switch which has a built in regulator and is switched by the receiver.

Have to ask I have used several spark switches the normal way and really do like them. But when at Toledo looked in to a plane and the plane only had one battery and the receiver and the spark switch was connected into the battery is this ok and has anybody done this.

I've been using the Smart Fly ignition cut off for years, about the same way you want to do it. Excellent product and Rob Richey provides great support and answers any questions you have. Give him a call, phone number is on his website.

I like 'em "BIG"!
Smart-Fly is all I have ever used and all I will ever use. I have never experienced a single failure in all the planes I have installed them in in the last upteen years. You can plug an RCExel Opto-Kill straight into your receiver and thereby eliminating the need for an extra ignition battery. No need of an IBEC. OR...You can use the Opto-Kill as designed with an extra battery. If you are wanting to use the Smart-Fly Optical Kill switch system, they also work very very well. I primarily use the SF boards. For me, it is a clean, dependable and robust system with zero failures to date. The reason I choose the Opto-Kill over the SF Optical Kill is primarily price and ease of setup. 13 bucks for the Opto-Kill vs. the other brands. Much much cleaner setup too.

You can go Tech Aero, RCExl or other type of opto kill switch. But if you want a strictly dedicated HV Lipi pack for ignition, and want a means of killing the engine, minus using the throttle trim, would be to install a micro switch on the positive wire forward of the battery connection. That micro switch would be activated via a micro servo from a switch on your Tx. This method was done prior to the advent of opto kills.

I like a Pico Switch for Tx controlled on/off. I use them to control the on and off of things like telemetry boards, smoke pumps, lighting, and ignitions.

I also use the Smart-Fly with the optic ignition feature and find it to be the most isolated an ignition can be. There are many ways to do these things and many options for getting there.
