Damn I'm hungry
I was not going to fool with this Extra just yet but I just had to put my mind to rest over the color scheme. The paint on the cowl and wheel pants have three noticeable runs and as I stated earlier the black paint on the cowl has dulled and orange peeled area up front. Nothing that cant be fixed though. The canopy slid from side to side about 7/32" so I added some shims from light ply and now the fit is perfect. I dry assembled the airframe to see if I am going to keep this. Minus landing gear, wheels, pants and tailwheel the airframe weighed exactly 8.5 pounds! It looks as if it will come in under 17 pounds with the DL50 and canister so I have decided to keep it and go forward. No build thread just assembly notes I will post up here and there time to time. I will say this one will be easily seen from just about anywhere lol.
Another interesting thing about this airframe is that the CF wing tube came with a reinforced cross section. Adds 4oz weight. Guess they did it to compensate for the higher loads on the longer wing span. It measured 89.5 inches.

Well.......I just could not resist NOT knowing what this plane is going to weigh. It is actually going to be a bit heavier than the V1 with a DA70!!!!! Weighed out all the RC goodies including hardware, fuel tank and lines, servo extensions etc etc.... and it came out to 18.5 pounds dry! This chunky monkey going to be 19.5 pounds full of fuel. Boy I hope that rebuild on the DL50 works out cuz it's going to get a work out flying the "Green Banana":brian-banana:.

The only difference in this V2 over the V1 as far as I can tell is........

The pipe tunnel opening in F1 is much larger allowing good access to LG nuts and bolts and easing the install of tune pipe or canister.

Carbon fiber rods added to the sides of the main formers that make up the lower portion of the "Thrust" box where all the pulling force the engine delivers is transmitted to the airframe. Personally I find this useless.

Carbon square stock imbedded in three stringers on the bottom of fuse.

Carbon dowels for anti rotation pins in wing and stabs.

Motor mount plate attached with aluminum angle stock and bolted on. Motor box has a much larger opening on top too.

CF wing tube fitted with a cross section brace along its length for strength.

End user has to glue on wing TE extensions.

At least i see your wing saddles are solid balsa , my LaserX are not the saddles are open with little thin pieces of lite ply glued and spaced out on the saddle. You can take your fingers and flex the saddle areas 1/4 inch. I am doing some mods to that area for sure. Also does your bird have a separate motor box that slides in to fuse.It includes the firewall and slides in from the front. Luckily it fits well just had to make sure the carbon fuse female tube lined up with the fuse box. Will have to glue the box onto the fuse area with glue of course and add some tri stock. Just got done installing the solid aircraft ply standoffs. It is 1 and 1/4 " thick. I just stood the fuse straight up against my work bench, got up on my ladder set the motor on the proper area for alignment and slipped on the cowl over it and carefully marked around motor mount / RCGF 60 Twin . Came out ok. I learned that trick from Tom who used to own Wildhare RC . I dont trust the existing alignment lines on firewall so that is the way i do all my motor mounts. That way also you can measure how far out you need to make the standoffs so there is proper distance between prop shaft and cowl front. If i had time i would post some pictures but i am semi retired -- to busy to do the photo shots. LOL . Used to work 2 full time jobs for 30 plus years , retired in 07, and enjoying every minute of life now. Yea reference your engine you say its a DL 50??? Did you have some work done on it? . I need about close to 5 lbs of weight up front for balance on mine so the motor weighs 4lbs 11ozs. and so i am adding some more lite ply around firewall area and pinning the sides with carbon tubes and plywood dowels. Yeah that's a bit portly. Not quite as heavy as the two 50cc Aeroworks airplanes I've had, but a pound heavier than my Pilot Edge. Of course I've got a 30+ pound 35% Hangar 9 Extra :oblong:.

The inboard wing trailing edge pieces are built up ply and balsa. Very sturdy and light. The wing saddle recess is actually a fiber material that is pretty thin. Motor box / pipe tunnel all built in at factory. I have not checked yet but I hope the stab incidence on this one is right. My V1 was set 1 degree too high and made for abrupt stalling at higher landing speeds. I had relocated the blind nuts that hold the stab in place and set the stab incidence positive 1.5 degrees and the plane landed very well at lower speeds then. I have seen video of this same V2 landing and the guy flying it stalled it on landing but I think he had it too tail heavy. It actually dropped the left wing pretty hard. This plane does fly very well if set up correctly. I too typically mount my motors in the same fashion. I am seriously thinking of getting the new RCGF 70 for this plane. Just as much power and is as light as the DA70 but almost 300 less. Money is a factor here these days.

What are you waiting for? In case you are unaware, these things do not assemble themselves. Ask me how I know this! Every night I come home from work expecting to see the baby Yak all completed and sitting in the middle of the living room floor looking all proud and :dancing-poop:. But nope! It remains the same each evening as I left it the night before. Damn Gremlins do...(not do) what ever they darn well please.

Ok i think your choice of motors is good /reference RCGF 70 twin. Make sure if you purchased one get it from ValleyView Rc. Tom gives great support and he works directly with RCGF . Even if he shows out of stock he gets the motors about every 2 weeks back in inventory. I wanted the 70 twin for the LaserX but the cowl is not wide enough for it . It is even going to be real close even with the angled plugs on the 60twin. My Redwing Edge 30cc cowl is actually 2 " wider inside than the Laserx cow.. Actually the laserX isnt much bigger than the current crop of 30 /35 cc birds. Except for wing span of course is bigger on the 60cc LaserX.
