Sport The Kool Kanary (Giant Hot Kanary)

I like 'em "BIG"!
She's all covered and has a brush coat of Nitrate and a brush coat of Butyrate.

One thing I'm doing different with the Kanary is I'm going to spray the last 4 fill coats of Butyrate instead of brushing. The Krier looks great but if you look at it close you can see slight brush marks even through the clear.

I want the cover job on my next project to be as close to perfect as I can get it (as I'm thinking I might compete with it) so the Kanary has turned into a bit of a test bed for things I want to try.

So anyway I spent this evening making holders and tomorrow I'll start spraying clear Butyrate. I'll be spraying color before you know it!!

pondering-and-thinking-smiley-emoticon.gif I am curious... (my mind seems to be wired as such these days-so many possibilities)... Do you have an idea of weight difference between painting with your method vs. covering? I would really be interested to know. (You know where this is going don't you?)

Fabric and paint is definitely heavier than film. The only way to know the difference 100% would be to cover the same airplane twice.

Rough estimate on my Krier was I added a couple ounces more than a pound of covering and paint. And it would have been less than a pound added with film.

But the fact that the planes can sit out on the flight line all day and not turn into a prune is a plus, means more room under the canopy for me ;)

The paint holds up a lot longer than film does to.

Thank you... I appreciate it. On a plane that size, added maybe a couple or so ounces. On a 40 center, I would bet those couple of ounces would turn into a couple of pounds. Naa....forget it Rob. Just don't even go there. Put the thought outta your head. Besides, You know how much you love covering anyway. LOL. Thank you again. But a painted red headed lady would definitely be nice.

Three coats of Butyrate sprayed on yesterday, and tonight I wet sanded it out with 400.

Now that I don't have any fingerprints left, tomorrow I'll spray 3 more coats. Let it sit a day and wet sand that out with 600.

Then spray the black for the pinstripes.

Where do you spray the plane in a spray booth or in the workshop

I'm spraying the clear right where its at in the picture. When I get to color I'm moving to my dads hangar (I just remodeled my shop and don't want yellow and blue overspray everywhere). But when that happens I'll be a little more at the mercy of mother nature as his hangar isn't sealed up as tight as my shop, and the humidity is hard to control.


That's why I'm in a bit of a hurry to get it painted in the next week or so while it's going to be cold. When it's cold, I can blast the heaters to dry the air up without it getting so hot the the dope dries to quickly which will cause it to orange peel.

I am probably going to build a paint booth that can be broken down and stored before I start my next build though. I have a couple of Ideas for one that I can set up inside the T-hangar that my shop is in (other side of the double doors) in an hour or so that will have a simple air filtration system, a dehumidifier and/or a heater/air-conditioner.
