Sport It's Been 30 Years Need Some Advice

Roger Chamberlain

When I left the hobby 30 years ago I was scratch building my planes from plans. Plans I would order from the magazines out at that time. So, I just finished an ARF Plane and now wanting to scratch build a little plane. In the past I would center line the ribs, drill holes holes at each end put steel rods through the ribs and finish on a home made wing jig.

My question?
See pic below. Center lined the rib. That building style I don't think will work with this wing. Truth.... I don't know how to build up this wing with no warps.

You're advise greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Roger

Dhal22,
Thanks, There's not quite enough wood at the centerline to cut a hole in the ribs to use my homemade jig. Im guessing the best way would be to centerline all the ribs. Then make sure the centerline is off the bench same distance for all the ribs. Looking for other ways to build it, but that may just be the best way.. Thank you again for the suggestion.

Rather than on the centerline you have marked, why not just put it halfway between the top and bottom of the airfoil. Perhaps using smaller rods.

Alternately, it DOES seem to have a flat-bottomed airfoil.

Most kits build with a rear tab on each rib. You can add them to the template and score them with the original line for easy breakoff. They need to be parallel with the bottom of the lower spar.

I would center the holes as suggested and use the jig. I remember using that style jig on the Great Planes trainer 40 many years ago, more than 30 as I think back. Getting old!

as long as each rib has the wing jig holes in the same location, you should be golden. Just build something to hold the wing up off your building board and have at it. I've done the same thing myself.
