Telemetry Usefullness

SlowHuck

Bling, bling for flying things.
I'm hooking up cylinder head temp and receiver voltage to my MX-2 (Futaba radio gear). I was wondering.... with today's GPS equipment, if the receiver looses transmitter signal, can you make an airplane "return to home" and make a circle over the airstrip? I know you can do it with some multi-rotor setups, some can even land at your feet. I wouldn't want it to attempt a landing, but it would be nice to circle over me, trying to re-connect.

On second thought... I guess it would need a gyro also to accomplish that.
There's always the possability of a giant scale sized ballistic parachute recovery system. In fact, I think it's been done...

I like 'em "BIG"!

That's an awesome idea. The complete package for my radio system offers the gyro. Who knows, that setup could save a lot of downed planes. I like the idea.

I would imagine that a GPS system similar to the ones currently available for multi rotors on large aircraft would make uncle sam really nervous. I bet many on this forum could put together a 1/2 scale cub that could easily carry a couple hundred pound payload halfway across most states. Couple that with a gyro unit connected to your phone and you could do some serious damage.

In addition to the comments above, I've found ignition telemetry super helpful for setting up a multi-point throttle curve. Knowing precisely the RPM, establishing the curve then smoothing it out really helps with having a nice linear throttle stick.

Of course, monitoring max RPM with telemetry is helpful for prop changes as well.

i am using telemetry on 4 of my tx, first one put to test 2 years ago, what i like the most is when RSSI starts to fall, she beeps and you know it's time to turn around, on Futaba 2.4 Ghz i have a range of over 3 kms (FPV of course), My JR 14 reads Rx voltage which again is cool, you know whether you can fly one more sortie or not

I tried using the Spektrum telemetry with the little do-hickey that plugs into the iPhone... I could never get that great of a signal with it and it kept losing connection. I'm looking at switching to the XG11 with the built in JR telemetry... it would be really nice to have batt voltage, engine temp and RPM.. I have a Fromeco Cricket on my plane now which shows current battery voltage as well as the lowest voltage during the flight...(and it looks pretty cool!) I think I've got it down to 7 volts running unregulated dual 5600 LiIons. That surprised me since fully charged they are 8.4 and I don't really fly my plane that hard. The batteries are obviously way over-sized and they are running direct to the Spektrum Powersafe receiver. I just didn't think it would drop that low.

The iPhone based telemetry is a joke. The Tm1000 connected to a compatible receiver paired to the newer radios works quite well. I can monitor engine temperatures and voltage from any distance I can still see my 104" extra.

The full size unit from Spectrum is only 55 bucks. It should work with any of the powersafe rx's.

Wish someone mentioned that before I bought it! My 12x obviously doesn't have telemetry but the XG11 will.. I will try again when I get it.
