Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

I tried HCS first. Apparently mine is out of alignment, needs calibration. If you go with Cricut, get the Maker. The Explore won't cut balsa.

Yes. I drew it up in CAD and imported it into Design Space.

Thanks for the tip about pre-shrnking the fabric used to cut reinforcement patches. I never thought of that. I would have probably ended up with a whole lot of ovals.

Looks like it worked well. How long did it take to cure? My test piece has sat for about 5 hrs and I could peel it apart if I wanted to. I'm gonna give it overnight and see.

I kinda thought CA would not be appropriate. No need to fill the weave, just a coat of epoxy primer before paint. Not covering the exits with fabric, just a reinforcement patch around the cable slit. I don't currently have any canopy glue (hint - don't leave it out in your unheated garage all...

Tony, a little off the current subject, but how did you cement your rudder cable exit fairings to the fabric. Ekobond? Since I'm not using a fabric glue would CA work?

Well done, Tony. How did you make it?

Hi Tony. Your covering job is looking good. I haven't thought too much about the rings. I'm a long way off from attaching those. I might try thin white plastic if I can find a couple of hole saws in the right sizes that won't tear the edges of the plastic up. I plan to use Pink-it tapes for the...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

looking good, Tony. I bought Profi2 fabric that is self-adhesive. Highly recommended by a couple of scale masters in my club. I tried it on the rudder and ailerons so far and it's easier than monokote. Are those the inspection rings from iflytaillies?

Thanks for the info Tony. I think the problem with the rib caps is that I used some contest grade balsa I had left over. I've spent the better part of today chiseling off the old caps and replacing them with harder balsa. Can't wait to watch you do the fabric.

I feel your pain Tony. Sanding down those tip profiles is a bear. I made this sanding block which helped and would have made it easy had I made the tips out of balsa instead of spruce. A low angle block plane was a great help initially. I also installed aluminum welding rod to the wingtips as...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Hi Tony. How's the build going? I made these hinges based on the full-size ones on the Chief. They're galvanized steel 1/16" thick with a small ball bearing press fitted into them. the aileron side is the same material bent around a wood filler piece. It will be encased in epoxy before being...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Hi AJ. I built the gear from Sturla's plans for the Chief. Like yours, my gear would fall out when I picked it up off the ground until the owner of Super Chief I'm modeling asked if I left the axel tube long enough to act as a stop against the bracket. I retrofitted a couple of nylon bolts in...
