89 AJ Slick repair

Manta

70cc twin V2
I bought an 89 slick with some damage to the wings and side of fuse from an unfortunate introduction to a deer feeder during a landing from what i was told. It was fairly new at the time. Took me several months of working on it a little at the time with supervision from some of my more experienced builder buddies. Was a major learning curve and I recommend it for anyone. Here are some pics i took along the way.

more pics. The wing ribs were a neat thing to build. I made them out of ply and used a piece of cardboard to make a template out of the very outside of the wing as to get the curve right..LOTS of sizing, fitting, then more sanding..Then more sanding..and again, more sanding loll
So I Didn't get pics of how i installed the sheeting. Was a neat (to me)process shown to me by Mel Scoggins. Would cut out small pieces and glue them on the underside of what was there already,to make a "shelf" or bracket so the sheeting would match up and be somewhat level..Sanding,sanding,sanding.. Then I used that hobby putty to fill in the small gaps from adding the sheeting patches.Wait=(rum and coke, repeat) for the putty to dry, then sand.;)
The "BEST" way for the covering would have been to pull all of the covering and start over I know. I couldnt afford to do that so I just made do,and learned the art of patching.
Thanks for looking! If any questions, comments, etc just drop a line. Go easy on me :)

Nice job Manta.............looks really good! You'll be the only one that knows.

My 71" Slick was a "purchased wreck" but more LG/motorbox damage. It was the only way I could afford it.

Good job Manta. Definately a learing process that can be used in the future. Not saying that you are a bad pilot, just that things happen. You could also pay it forward to other buddies if needed, now that you have the know how.

Nice job.
How many hours did you have in that repair?

There is no telling lol. 40? More? Dunno. I worked on it off and on for several months. I am learning and very slow so an experienced builder/ repair person could half my time im sure

That's awesome. If you didn't tell us and share no one would even know. Wtb crashed airplane to sent to manta to repair for me. Hahahaha. At some point I'm sure I'll be introduced to repairing a balsa airplane. I don't own one yet. I repair foam fairly well though. Haha.
