    Well Fellas,

For all the years I've been a part of this AWESOME website, I have never had a Giant Scale plane that is close to being ready to fly. That all changed today when my flying Buddy showed up at the flying field this morning with this in the back of his truck.

You could have knocked me over with a feather when my Buddy said "it's yours". . . . . :yesss:. Needless to say, I have been on Cloud 9 all day. . . . . . :brian-banana: The plane has a DA-50 in it which is WAY TOO MUCH engine for it. He also gave me a 22x8 and a 22x10 Mejzlik prop for it. All it needs is a receiver and batteries. While I have a receiver and the batteries will be here by next weekend, I will not fly it until I get some more stick time on something else since I have not done much flying this year. My Buddy bought the plane the first year Hangar 9 came out with it, but I doubt the plane has flown two dozen times. The Ultracote is starting to show its age so a "Strip & Recover" thread may be in store for next Spring, but for now, I am just going to fly the pants off of it. . . . . :big_yes:.

Dude; Can I be your buddies friend too? I mean, I would just love to have friends give me planes so I didn't have to spend any more cash ya know? LMAO. Seriously David, I am very happy for you. I would be on cloud 9 also. Good for you my friend. I mean really, good for you! That is really not a bad little bird. Ask me how I know this? I actually bought one a couple of years back. Brand new in the box and couldn't wait to get it put together. Engine choice was DLE 55. Ummm….. too much power? OMG! I have heard it said you can never have too much power. And I used to agree with that. Not so much after attempting that little experiment. It flew really well, but due to the extra weight it landed a little faster than normal. Not unmanageable at all. Just out of the ordinary. It flew really pretty good. Straight up vertical? Umm, 1/4 throttle was "ROCKET" ship to the moon fast. As good as it flew, predictable and stable and consistent and all, there was one thing I would like to caution you of. I was really afraid of "ripping" the tail right off that thing in a high "G" maneuver. Something else too, At full power straight out flight it went like you can't believe, but found the tail feathers were a little sluggish at controlling that kind of power. Maybe the lil DA50 will be a little more docile than that 55 was for me. I ended up selling it after I think, six flights?! It was just too small for me. The young man I sold it to bought a DLE 35ra and replaced the 55. It really was perfect then. Anyway, Get after it. Get that thing airborne. And tell your flying buddy.."KUDO'S" Huge kudos. It is so cool that there are still so many awesome people in this hobby.

That's cool! It's awesome to have great friends. That is how I got back into flying in 2011. My buddy Tony came by the house with a nearly new JR 9503, Duralite batteries, and 5 Hitec servos. A few days later a guy in the club had an Aeroworks Yak54 with a DA50 and tuned pipe and no electronics for sale cheap. So, I had a nice 50cc flying airplane for cheap.
We fly together every weekend we can. His wife even calls me his Sunday wife.;)

Enjoy you new airplane. For a while there I had 3 DA50 powered airplanes at the same time. It's not a powerhouse by today's standards, but they run awesome and are extremely reliable with good care and feeding. Read that last part as use Redline oil.;)

    Thanks Buddy. I appreciate it.

You are right about my flying Buddy. heis AWWESOME. The second part of your post, I'm not so sure about. . . . . . .

You're right David. I'm really getting excited about flying it. . . . . :yesss:

    Thanks Snoopy, I appreciate it. . . . . :way_to_go:

    Hey Rob,
Did your fingers get tired after typing all that? . . . . . .. Just kidding, my friend. I always value your thoughts & suggestions. Your post rings true on so many points. I know I can take the plane off and fly it, but I am most apprehensive about the landing speed of the plane. I am also considering bolting a 23x8 falcon prop that I got from Chris (Balsadust) on the engine to help lower the RPM's a bit to help slow it down. I am probably just worrying too much. If my Buddy had decided to keep the DA-50, I would have put a DA-35 on it in a heartbeat! ! ! You are absolutely right about the people in this hobby. Everyone I have met is so cool.. . . . . :big_yes:

    Hey Doug,
I remember you sharing the story of you getting back in the hobby with that Yak. I too, am happy your friend gave you the transmitter & goodies to get you back in the hobby because this site wouldn't be the same with out you.:way_to_go:. "Sunday wife". . . . . :lol2:. I gotta remember that one.

Sweet David! Had one of those myself. Awesome flyer with the DA50. Hangar 9 had some really good designs during that time.
Hope you enjoy it thoroughly. Covering looked great in the pics. Just iron it all back down and break out your "elbow grease"
and give it a wax job :).

    Thanks Kelly,

I still cannot believe it's mine. The wax job was done before I took the pictures. It really made the cowl & canopy shine, but didn't help the covering all that much. The covering is a little loose in a couple of places, but I am leary of trying to re-shrink it because it is so old. So I think I am just going to leave well enough alone.

    Take care Buddy
