Older 3W and DA for First 40%er

So I've found a couple used and even one new older engine that I'm thinking about buying for my Dalton 300. They're mostly DA 150, 3W 150, and 3W 157. I know buyer beware when buying second hand motors but what do you guys think about going this route to begin?

I could always save up and buy an entirely new motor later but I'm just thinking of finding something to start out with since I've never owned a plane of this size and it gets the plane done and flying for less money.

I have had both the DA and 3W and both were used when I got them. They both have been great engines with no problems. I got my 40%ers in the air for a fraction of $$ compared to new. You do take a risk but for me it has worked out.

You've got a lot of patience so if you are confident in the build I'd just buy new. I had to look back and it looks like your coming up on the 7th year anniversary of starting your build so whats a little longer?

I'm kind of one of those that never buy's used engines or electronics. Never know where they have been. I will say though that I have no trouble buying used DA engines because I know it takes one trip back to them and it will be gooder than new.

If broken in and run properly (i.e. recommended gas:eek:il ratio, octane rating of gas, etc.) a used motor may actually be 'better than new' ..... I was once told by an 'old-timer' that I'd wear out multiple airframes long before a well maintained gas engine would even start to show signs of wear.

If I'm really unsure I will have the seller send the motor to the appropriate vendor (usually DA or 3W) and I pay for a normal inspection....if anything is found beyond normal wear and tear seller agrees to pay.

This path gives both the seller and me the confidence that a deal will be good for both.

Just my two cents

I only own 2 new engines. All my other engines are used 3W's. You can do everything you need on a 150 or 157. AI and DA have good service (though I give a nod to DA on this one).

The question really is.......have you owned a 3W? They are sure more finicky to tuning than a DA. Properly tuned they will be better but DA's are more forgiving (ignition is better also).

It would come down to price and condition of the motor (i.e. know the owner, oil/crashes/abuse etc).

My IMAC 42% flies a 3W157CS BTW. Not hurting at all.

I have purchased the majority of my engines used. Multiple 3W 106's, 3W 150TOC and GP 176EVO and they have all ran great. Bought a new DLE-170 and luck of the draw, after about 4 gallons of 32 to 1 redline on 91 octane real gas, started having issues with it going lean after the 3rd flight of the day. Replaced the carb and thought all was well until one day one of the cylinders decided it was time to go to lunch and took the other one with it. I will be rebuilding the engine because everything but the cylinders and pistons is still in great shape. We came to the conclusion that the right cylinder wasn't properly torqued at the factory and was working its way loose after a few flights and went lean in flight when it took out the cylinders :( The GP 176EVO is what replaced it and WOW what a difference.

With due diligence, picking up a good used engine can get you in the air and while you are enjoying the plane you can tuck away some funds for a new engine of the size and brand you want.

You have absolutely no worries with used DA engines. My SOP when selling them, is to send them in to DA for a check-up. If they need anything I pay for it. The engine then goes directly from DA to the new owner. This is also what I would require of anyone, other than someone I knew very well, to do if I Were going to purchase a used DA engine.
