Sport The Kool Kanary (Giant Hot Kanary)

Yep I sure can, it will be a week or so as I'm getting ready to spray dope and I can't make fiberglass bust while I'm spraying. I'll PM you when I can do it :)

Three coats of nitrate on the whole airframe. Tomorrow I start gluing Koverall down :)

I've got a pretty a pretty good buzz but the airframe has been doped with Nitrate :) Probably going to be Snowed in this weekend so it'll be a good time to start gluing down fabric.

Alert! Is HOBBICO Next? Hobbico files for bankruptcy

I have to agree with Mike. It started when they paid a bunch of money for Lanier and Goldberg only to kill the lines completely. Then they started chasing the toy drone market and sold out their core customers the traditional modelers (for the record I think drone guys can also be considered...

The Kanary has been sanded, filled, sanded, filled, sanded, filled, sanded........ I don't think I have any fingerprints left!! But tonight I got the shop cleaned, and vacuumed. I vacuumed all the dust and loose chunks of putty out the fuse and wings. Tomorrow after I wipe it down with a...

Not a lot, just filling and sanding getting it ready to cover. But it's been slow the last few days as the temperature hasn't gotten above 5 degrees for a week lol. It's supposed to warm up the end of the week so I might get to start covering over the weekend.

I have a Quadra Q35 on mine. I think anything around the 30-35cc range would be fine.

It's pulled from a second mold and then secondary bonded to the cowling with resin and thixotropic silica (same stuff as gel coat). Can't take credit for the the shape though, it is actually my Grampa's mold. It was in the box that I got from his buddy that had the Krier Kraft wheel pant mold.

Lol, yea the strength of a steel 1/4-20 bolt is overkill, heck I've seen full scales that have wing bolts that are 1/4-28 lol. The steel ones are just in there for now because with the brass inserts I put in the wing block the steel ones can be screwed in with my fingers. I like to use 1/4-20...

Some details going on :) The windshield is a cardboard mock up for now, I'm going to make a plug and a fiberglass frame shortly.

So I figured I better catch y'all up lol. It didn't seem as though many people were interested in this build and I let the thread slip some :) It's just going to be a picture blast, to get it up to date (as I'm actually getting close to covering). If you see something interesting feel free...

I've been slowly pecking away at the ailerons the last few days. I decided to make control horns like I did on the Krier, I just made them a little bigger so I could get more throw. Just have to hinge one, and then I can move on to fitting the wing to t fuse. The aileron and aileron...

Sport The Kool Kanary (Giant Hot Kanary)

I got both wingtip blocks on and carved and the cap strips done on the top of the wings. Nest it is on to the servo pockets. I started by building the pocket fram out of 1/4" sq. basswood. I then made corner gussets out of spruce, the double as the screw mounts for the servo plate...

Sport The Kool Kanary (Giant Hot Kanary)

Yep, I like to cut the aileron free before I sheet both sides. It gives me more flexibility when it comes to where I put the hard point for the horn, where the balsa backups for hinges go and so forth. Not to mention it makes cutting them free a lot less nerve wracking ;)

Sport The Kool Kanary (Giant Hot Kanary)

I put the cap strips on the tip ribs in anticipation for the tip blocks. After I put the leading edge caps on and shape them, it will be time for the tip blocks. After that all that will be left is the cap strips, aileron servo mounts and finishing up the ailerons.

After cleaning up the sheeting around the aileron cut out I put the cove block in. This is a 1/8" strip of sheet balsa glued to the face of the rear spar. Make sure to leave it a little big. After it is glued in, true it up with the sanding block, sanding it down flush with the sheeting.

Sport The Kool Kanary (Giant Hot Kanary)

Okay so cutting ailerons free from wings is much easier than it seems. It also makes it easier to build a good fitting aileron because you build the aileron as you are framing up the wing. First off the tools that you need are a razor saw, a #11 Xacto blade, a metal straight edge and a pencil...
