Ultra Stick 30 Twin First Hover

I finally built up enough nerve to try my first hover! What a blast! I was fighting a bit of wind down the beach, but the plane did great.

Here's a quick video of what two of the Scorpion's sound like spinning 15x8 props just over 9k rpm. 4 of them is going to sound wicked! I played with my throttle calibration/curves on both motors to get them very close in RPM. It eliminates most of the oscillating/droning sound you hear from...

6061-T6 is incredibly strong material. The heat treating that makes it good for spring gear, makes it a pain to bend!

Very nice! What was the weight difference between the gear legs? Assuming the Airtops are the majority of the weight increase?

Play the flame of a propane torch directly on the area you want the bend for 30-60 sec. If you put a little pressure on the bend as you near temp you'll feel it start to soften. Have something ready to quickly check your bend angle. Play the heat on the bend if you take a little bit getting the...

Looking good! Glad to see USA material, I've had issues with china sourced 4130 and aluminum being very brittle. A little heat and the generous bend radius should work great.

I spent some time digging in to more thrust/power testing and exploring the data logging feature on the Castle Creation Edge ESCs. I've used the Castle Link Windows software and their Bluetooth Link/iPhone app quite a bit fine tuning ESC settings but never ventured into the logging. What a...

The main power unit is air cooled with fans. The water cooler is an accessory that pumps a coolant out the welding leads and circulates through the torch head. For hobby use air cooled is simple and cheaper. Just don't expect to build a boat with one. I'd look at Everlast, options for hobby...

I built this ATV rack with my Miller Diversion 165amp air cooled torch machine. 3/16” plate. It took everything it had and the torch gets very hot fast. This size project and down with 165 or 185 amp machine. If you expect more go 200+amps with a liquid cooled torch.

Thanks guys, I really do appreciate it. TIG welding is both incredibly rewarding and insanely frustrating at times when tackling thin wall tubing. I've slowly accumulated tools and tried to develop skill with them over the years. My dream house would be a giant shop full of tools with a bed in...

I have a little Miller Diversion 165 TIG welder with a Flex head CK torch/gas lens setup. My buddy recently let me borrow his Dynasty 200 with a liquid cooled torch, that's what this was done with. I have my eye on an Everlast Lightning MTS 275 upgrade.

Thanks guys! Aluminum is such a pleasure to work with. If anyone is looking for less common/thin wall metal I've had great luck with https://www.wicksaircraft.com/. Most local suppliers only carry standard, thicker metals.

I hit the quad motor mount hard today and made some good progress! Everything is fabricated, tacked, and ready for final welding.

Success! I threw together a quick test stand out of some wood scraps, door hinge, and a luggage scale. The setup runs smooth. I'm getting around 13lbs static on a single motor, 23-24lbs on the pair inline. The Twinber is now Timber XL-4!I'll start building the quad motor mount tomorrow.

Last weekend I did some power/thrust testing of the scorpion 4035-250 motors and hit a couple snags. I'm not getting near the thrust numbers listed, and the Graupner E-Props are experiencing some kind of blade resonance. Scorpion has some very elaborate charts for their smaller motors, and I've...

On my plane the stock gear is quite a bit narrower than the fuselage mounting slot and it's mounted at the rear. The mount holes in the fuselage slot are also offset to the rear. I wanted all the width possible, so I used the full slot and expanded forward. That's why the mount holes look...
