Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% Piper Cherokee Glass Fuselage Build.

Pulled the wing skin out of the mold today. This is 2 ounce and 4 ounce cloth. Not quite stiff enough for my liking. I would work great on a solid foam core but not foam rib construction. The weight is 81 grams currently. Going to add another layer of 4 ounce cloth that should put the...

Appears they do, both optical and magnetic. You can mount the magnetic pickup on engine and use the ignition magnet.

NO! Just get RPM telemetry. that way you know what is happening in the air. The pins look great.

    What beer ya drinking tonight?

You know I just noticed the Steelers sign on the wall too! Had to be a great place.

Have the nose wheel pant roughed out. I used a pant from the first 30% that survived the crash. Little bit of sawing, foam and filler, a whole lot of sanding. This is the first coat of primer so it needs filled and sanded a few more times. Have the stab tip and the rudder ready for the second...

You know it's a great dive bar when you find ash trays on the bar. Quit in 2008 but my wife still smokes, getting harder and harder to find a smoking bar but the folks you find there are normally fun and friendly.

Pulled the stab skin mold off the plug. Now the waxing begins. The PVA is still on the mold in the photo below. I wet sanded the corrugations with 1500 and finer and then put the first coat of wax on. Thinking one layer of 2 ounce and one layer of 4 once, then evaluate the stiffness. With...

Working on the nose wheel pant. The commercial unit is a nice lay up and looks good however it is not scale. Attached is a photo from the first 30% built and a few photos of the full scale. The full scale is odd shape for sure and the commercial unit looks sexier but it is not scale.

Some photos. I think you just need to shorten the back seat. Photo one clearly shows the front and back. Photos two and three are same plane you can just barely make out the front seat but I sure it is curved.

Wet sanded the wing tip this morning and started waxing. Doing a little plumbing job at my daughter's and between tool stops and Lowe"s visits managed to get the tip and stab tip mounted and lined with clay . Dusted 4 coats of PVA then a final wet coat. Headed out to bar bingo, might get the...

I sanded all the orange peel and defects with 1500, then the rest of the paper goes fast to 5000. In this photo I got in a hurry and put the first coat of wax on before rubbing with Diamond Cut. It has plenty of shine. You can see each LED in the shop light. Got the black tooling coat on the...

Learned something new today, never heard of MicroMesh before. The grit numbering does not appear to align with convention used on regular sandpaper. On one offering it was stated that 1500 is similar in grit range to conventional 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. No reference was made for the...

Put the color to the stabalator tip this morning, three down two to go. Wet sanded the stab plug with 1500, need to pick up some 2000, 2500 and 3000 today.

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% Piper Cherokee Glass Fuselage Build.

Put the color to the rudder plug this morning. Two down, three to go excluding the yoke. I think the stab tip will be ready to paint this weekend, the wing tips need a lot of work yet. Would like to have the molds completed by end of the month so that I can devote my time to Champ wings and...

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% Piper Cherokee Glass Fuselage Build.

Was putting some final color coat on the yoke and the paint lifted, darn rattle cans. Rather than try to sand the wrinkles I soaked it in acetone and wiped off all the paint and primer. I wasn't happy with the center section so that is changed now. It is closer to scale now. Still have a few...

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% Piper Cherokee Glass Fuselage Build.

The Champ came in at 39 pounds, has a wing area of 2800 sq.in., the cubic loading 7.28. I had trouble early on that I thought was due weight however the problem actually ended up being lack of sufficient down and right thrust. The first 30% Cherokee came in at 30 pounds with an area 2000 sq...

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% Piper Cherokee Glass Fuselage Build.

Wing Tips, not shoes! First the foam blanks are rough cut to the airfoil shape and glued onto the short wing section. The wing tip curvature was copied off the three and laid out, a template was made so that both sides are nearly identical. Then the foam was sanded down to the balsa sheeting...

Scale Wendell Hostetler 30% Piper Cherokee Glass Fuselage Build.

I think I'm done with the hot wire bow for a while. Cut a 12" section of the wing tip profile to make molds for the wing tips. Planning to use foam to fashion the plugs, too much balsa would be wasted. On the flip side my pile of heavy 1/8" balsa sheet is getting smaller, kind of happy, too...
