Discussion The I’m going out flying thread 2018

The forecast for this morning is nice. Mostly sunny, 3 mph breeze, and temps in the 70's. I have to meet some friends for lunch at noon, but I'm going flying beforehand. No gassers unfortunately, there just isn't time, so it's Mig flyin day. I think I'll take the Trex550e too. The forecast for...

    Show Me the Biplanes!!!!

It's known as a Clevis with a Folding Spring Bolt. The smallest I can find them in is 4MM and they are all in the UK. Big on Go-Karts evidently.

No doubt, that must have been some fine Chinese steel to snap that easy. Those must be some giant wheels to take a 3/8" bolt for an axle. A 5" White Rose only uses a 1/4" axle.

I'm hoping that 3/8 is a typo. The shear strength of even a grade 2 3/8 bolt is several hundred of pounds.

I finished painting the cowl and cuff for my Extra 300X yesterday. Since the surface of the fiberglass was so rough my results are less than spectacular, but that's whet you get sometimes when your trying to make Apple Butter out of :dancing-poop:. It does look better than it did before the...

Thanks! I really really wish I would have gotten the 120cc one when they were still out. It's an absolute crying shame that Pilot killed that Edge. I'm just not a fan of the one they have now.:(

    Hangar 9 3.1M Sukhoi

My Pilot edge has a spot just like that in the same place.. It's just a bad spot for covering. Shrinking just pulls it off the curve. I ended up cutting mine in a few spots, ironing it down, then putting a small piece over the top. Not gorgeous to look at, but hasn't come apart again.

It's funny how 73 and windy can feel chilly when your used to 95! It was the first time the Sukhoi has been out this year, and only the second time I had the Edge out. Last time I had the Edge out we had a lot of problems getting it started, so I richened the low a tad and it did fine today...

Well it turns out I didn't either.:) It was windy, but not too bad. At times it was a bit chilly believe it or not, it was hard to believe it's July.:oblong:

You know me Rob, I am the GSN self appointed wheel pant Nazi.;) It's going to be a nice cool day here today, with a high just over 80, the problem is it's 7 am and the wind is already at 17 mph according to the weather station at the field.:(

That looks awesome Rob! One thing I need to add, epoxy the crap out of those cowl blind nuts. If they spin in the plywood it will truly ruin your day. Ask me how I know.

The 'What did you do in your workshop tonight?' thread

I primed the spots on my cowl and cuff last night before I went home. This afternoon I sanded the primer with 400 grit wet, and then used a wet gray scotchbrite pad and some sanding solution to scuff up everything else for the clear to stick. Sanding solution is kind of a gritty soap you use...

I spent a couple weeks messing with heli's before airplanes, but my first airplane flight was in early fall of 85 with a Super Box Fly 40. I was lucky enough to solo on the second day. I remember that plain as day, it was raining! My buddy Tony that taught me had been flying for two weeks! The...
