Scale 25% Krier Kraft build, a tribute to grampa.

Finished drawing the other side of the wing. With the structure drawn I moved on to drawing in some detail. This is the center section depicting the grooved block that the landing gear will mount in.

Yep, I have a set of those. Matter of fact I had my tips drawn to match the Whitehead plans until my dad saw them lol, he said and I quote "I may not remember all the details but his wingtips didn't look like that" lol. And because I'm trying to match grampa, I changed them ;)

Also, by making my tips a little larger and round I was able to stretch the span from 68" to the scale span of 71".

I've spent the last few evenings working on the wing drawings. I changed the shape of wing tip to a more round shape, as that is the best I can come up with judging from pictures and dad's memory of grampa's. The original plans depict more of a Bucker type shape, and I don't think my tips are...

Yes, the servos I'm going to use have 250oz of torque which should be more than enough as the ailerons aren't as crazy huge as a 3D airplane. Again grampa used his Krier as kind of a test platform. He built boost tabs on all the control surfaces, which had to be a rigging nightmare but he...

Harold was a heck of a designer, he was helping Charlie Hillard with the design of the Spinks Acro. Unfortunately that was the airplane he was spin testing when he was killed. Thanks for posting! ;)

As the build progresses I would like to be able to share the stories with you guys that my dad has shared with me about my Grampa Mick. He was one hell of a guy and was one fascinating individual, but I am quite bias. I have some really neat pictures to share from his Air Force career which...

The original plans. You can see where I has started to draw the changes on the original plan before I decided to redraw the whole thing. The nose is totally wrong and the turtle deck has a Bucker Jungmeister type turtle deck. The fin and rudder are actually the right shape for the changes...

Working on finishing the former drawings. I omitted some of the outer details such as the stringers and/or sheeting and covering. The sheeting will stop at the end of the wing saddle (F6). FINALLY finished redrawing the formers. I went back and added the 1/4 x 1/4 bottom stringers between...

Some plans for the equipment are: DLE 35RA, it will not be 3D but this plane isn't meant for that anyway! lol Falcon 18x8 Prop Pro-Modeler S160DL High Voltage servos, I won't be putting the functional boost tabs but probably will immolating them. Fromeco Li-ions Smart-Fly Fiber Optic ignition...

Not sure, Hal Krier was a farmer from Kansas that developed a love of flying in the air corps during WWII. I really only know his history in aviation, so it's possible!

Thanks all! As I said, it will be awhile before I get to actually cutting and gluing any wood but I'm pretty excited about it! I still have to finish drawing the formers, redraw the wing and completely redesign the horizontal tail as the original plan show a Bucker style stab and elevator...

So a little more about Grampa's Krier. Shortly before he got sick he got to take his Krier to many fly-ins around the Ohio/Indiana aera. At one of the fly-ins a writer for Radio Control Magazine was there and talked to him and snapped a few pictures of the Krier. It was later in the Big is...

Scale 25% Krier Kraft build, a tribute to grampa.

With most of the structure in the side view drawn I turned my attention to the top/bottom view. My intention is to build the airplane upside down over the plan and be able to add the side formers and most of the bottom stringers before I ever have to take it up from the plans. Using the...

Scale 25% Krier Kraft build, a tribute to grampa.

I started by tracing the outline of the original plans as well as the placement of the internal box and bulkhead placements. To shorten the nose and make it look more like a Krier and less like a Bucker, I had to remove the first 2 bulkheads, F1 and F2, shown on the original plans. I then...

Now bear with me as this build will be a little slow going at first. A few years ago dad found a set of "King Kong Krier" plans on ebay for sale and picked them up pretty cheap. They promptly got put on the shelf as one of those "that be neat" days. Well those days have come. After getting...

WHERE THE IDEA CAME FROM Well, I've been itching to build for awhile because as much as I love my PAU ARFs nothing compares to the feeling of flying a plane you created from a box of stick. I had fun rebuilding my Pitts but again, it was a rebuild. Now I have been considering the Hostetler...
