Discussion Ohio RC Sukhoi

How many of you "old timers", like myself remember the old Ohio RC Sukhoi? My flying Buddy had the 77" Extra's but I only remember it vaguely. I also remember him telling me the Extra flew VERY well.

The reason I ask is that I will be getting one of Bob's 98" Sukhoi kits early next year from a gentleman in CA and I would like to learn more about the plane and how it flew.

I will almost certainly get someone else to build it for me, but I will worry about that later.

I was going to put the 3W 100 I got from @Bartman in it until another of my so called friends asked me "why don't you put one of the new Saito 90 gas radials in it?" and now I cannot get the thought out of my head. . . ..

So what can you Fella's tell me an out the big Sukhoi ? Any input will be greatly appreciated .

TIA,
David

I have had several of his kits still have an extra 260 I belive in the box never opened with all the accessories and extras. You do know they are one piece wink. Never had sukhoi but had an chipmunk, ultimate and two extras. Best flying planes I have ever had they are quite the building project. Please note they are not 3D machines. Just very good flying aeroplanes.

Hello @Snoopy1,

Yes, the kit comes standard as a one piece wing. However, my kit is coming with a wing tube & socket plus all of the rest of the accessories except the landing gear so it is going to be built as a 2 piece wing. I appreciate your input. . . . . :yesss:. I am not going to build my Sukhoi or not without ALLOT of help anyway . . . . :big_yes:. I am also not concerned that it isn't a 3D plane because I am not a 3D pilot. . . .

Happy Holidays Buddy,
David

If and when the plane is built I would be interested to see how the changes for a tube is done. That would be no small feat. Because the way Ohio did wing connection to the fuse with 4 bolts that is part of the fuselage will have to be filled in and the wing root rib cut and changed to fit the outside of the fuselage.

Hey @Snoopy1,

I will have to wait until my kit ad plans arrive. I hope you are a patient person, because the way it's looking now, it will be at least a year before construction begins on the Sukhoi as I still have a couple of other planes to get done first.

Any pictures of one of these complete. Would love to see it. Don't see why you couldn't make the wings two piece for ease of transport but still bolt it on with four bolts through the bottom.

If you are suggesting that you leave the wing as is but split and add a tube then slide the wing together and then bolt to the fuse as originally intended then that makes it a lot easier. Never built the sukhoi plane so I am sure how they did that plane. But on the extra that would be difficult because they built up the wing in the center and then the canopy fit the wing and fuse. It was only part in the build if you did not get right it looked bad and took some effort to get it all to fit nicely together, but when done right excellent connection and looked good.
