I don't like it either. But I am not going to let it ruin my fun. I will register on Monday and I will continue to fly and have fun with my planes.
Some day we will get a president like Reagan that will pull the government out of our hair via deregulation. Until then, fighting them is not worth the effort.

I agree with that statement. I don't want to pull politics into this forum, but continuing to have fun flying model aircraft, pay my 3yr/$5 dues, I don't plan on being reckless with the hobby so I shouldn't have to worry about in much. I have some friends with the FAA who fly model aircraft - with that said, unless model UAS interfere with the National Airspace or peoples privacy - I think they'd rather stick their heads in the sand as well.

Totally agree with you man. It is what it is and I will continue to do what I do for as long as I can. Doesn't mean I have to like it though. :)
And I'll probably rant about it again some other time :cursing: We used to call him Ronald RayGun :peace: BooYa Baby... That boy wasn't afraid to lay down the hate.

Ok so to start off, this post is not intended to start arguments for or against or to start flaming anyone....

I see reaction to the new FAA rules, a few for the new registration, and a vast majority against on many forums on the internet. Some say "Why do we have the AMA, they haven't done anything for us..." or "I'm not going to register, I'll just take my chances, who's gonna check anyway?"

Both are somewhat valid questions and comments but in my opinion, just my opinion and I welcome other opinions as that is how I learn, I think of the whole registration issue as just another hoop we as responsible model aircraft flyers need to put up with so we can enjoy our fantastic hobby. Yes it is a pain in the butt, yes it gives "big brother" another foothold to track us. If you don't want to register then fine don't. If we go back to the AMA issue, there are two things we need to think about. If you are an AMA member then we are already registered, we have a number right now and by rule we are supposed to mark our AMA number, Name, address, and phone number on each aircraft we fly, be it line control, remote control, free flight, indoors or outdoors. I see very few AMA numbers on aircraft at flying events and flying fields. But we belong to the AMA, for the majority of us, for the insurance they provide us (I also enjoy the magazine). Second thing is that what if we didn't have the AMA to represent us, we don't always see what is going on behind the scenes, be it legislation, site development, youth programs ect. What if we didn't have them on this issue, I can almost guarantee that we would have been more upset with what the FAA dictates we would have to do to be able to fly our models. We will never know what might have been because these rules have been tempered by the AMA.

As far as registration, here in Washington state, by law we are supposed to have insurance on our cars before we can take them out on public roads. You don't have to show proof of insurance to purchase, license, or even drive unless you get into an accident or get pulled over by law enforcement officials. If you don't have insurance then you will have financial and possibly criminal penalties to deal with. So if you dont register, then fine don't, but if something were to happen with the aircraft you are flying, it gets away from you, crashes into an airplane, tower, runway or whatever I can almost say with certainty that someone knows that you have that airframe and fly it and in the course of investigations, depending how severe the violation, you will be found out and have penalties to deal with anyway.

So I guess what I am saying is I am not going to let this ruin my fun with this hobby, my friends I fly with and people I will meet in the future at flying events just because I don't want to follow the rules or don't agree with them.

I've heard several people say "I don't want my name in a government database". I can appreciated that. I'm retired military, I pay taxes, I have a concealed carry permit, I'm an FAA licensed pilot, I'm a registered voter, the list goes on, my name is in all kinds of government databases. I don't plan on breaking the law with my planes or my drone (yes I own one) so I am really not worried about this at this point.

It'll be just as effective as a terrorist going to shoot up a building full of people. We already have laws to prohibit it, even register the firearms, but it doesn't stop them. More political BS being injected into everyone's daily lives. Just when I thought the hobby was my escape, I get dragged right back into it.

The Charge for registration in a few years will go up and up. It is just to make money and more money.

It's called bureaucracy. It's an evil demon that must be fed. And if we don't feed it willingly, it will force us.

How many people here know how the head of a department in the FAA get's a raise? I don't mean a 'standard of living' raise to keep up with inflation, I mean a REAL raise?

Do they get a raise by working hard and producing better results with fewer resources? Nope! They get a raise when their department gets bigger. That's right, when they add MORE employees to the payroll, the boss gets a raise. Soon how does the boss manage to get to hire more employees? That's simple, find something that is not currently regulated, and regulate it. Boo yah, we need to hire new agents to police the new regulations and force compliance. Uh Oh, all these new employees are getting tube expensive, plus the boss needs his raise too.

No problem, just enforce fees upon the poor bastards that just got regulated. You know, the ones that were doing just fine without the rules. Fees not enough? Ok, will implement fines! Uh, oh...we need to hire more employees to go police the regulations so they can give out fines so we can pay the new employees AND the boss' raise. Oh, and now that we have new employees to hand out fines, the boss gets another raise. Oh Happy Day!
