Tony might have an opinion here. Thanks for the inspection ring suggestion btw. I could almost add a little scale here and add screws to the ring.......

The rings are installed without screws, for the first inspection the center is cut out and a metal cover is installed to cover the hole. Covers can be screwed around the perimeter or held in place with a spring on the back side. The screw hole markings on the rings from I Fly Tales disappear when covered with cloth.
I would just make the fake stitches a slight bump, maybe small fiber fishing line. Standard rib lacing is .035 diameter, so you looking for .010" bump, not much. If you make it bigger, it will make more work trying to get the fabric ironed down around the stitch. They also offer a flat rib lacing that is .012" thick by .080" wide, this is for those that want a smaller bump. So in your case. you looking at a .004" bump if simulating a flat cord.

Here the screw hole marking can be seen after covering but the slight dimple made by the laser is filled with glue that adhered the doily. Once painted they are gone.

I did a run of heavy duty thread today, I'll do another trial run on the wing tomorrow. Also I think 1/2" tape is the correct size. My first practice run was 3/4".
