New 20cc Profile coming by the end of July--65" Extra 330

Yes, it just cleared the motor can too. I had to file down the opening a little bit to get the motor to fit properly and thought that I might have to take off some more once I added the angles, but it just made it...

Last night I added the washers and took another picture to show the clearance. The thrust angles now look correct.

I'm not a liquid fueled guy... at least not with my planes anyway. I agree that I love the sound of a 4 stroke motor. I even contemplated putting one on this plane as a first, but decided to go with electric.

I'm going to set the thrust with washers, which is why there is no clearance right now. Once the washers are installed (probably tonight) the clearance should be correct. I probably should have given myself more room just in case, but I can always add more washers.

Unfortunately I can't do a whole lot more on the electric until I get the plane assembled, but I'll still keep everyone up to date as it goes. If the CG is fine with a single battery, then mount it on one side and go 5S. If it turns out that I need more nose weight, then I will go 6S and mount...

New 20cc Profile coming by the end of July--65" Extra 330

Here's my conversion to electric so far. Sorry about the quality of the pics... they were taken in the living room that is loaded with stuff as we rearrange, but I was able to do some work anyway. I used some standard corner brackets that I put a twist into. I drilled a third hole in the...

I'm planning to run mine on electric. I should have it for this weekend, so I'll be able to assess what it will take.

    The NotForSale

Thanks. I enjoyed flying the NotForSale so much that it is the only thing I flew for two full weekends! The only reason I stopped was because I brought it down too low and dumped it into the corn!!! Everything worked exactly as I wanted it too; the wings came off, the battery ejected and the...

    The NotForSale

Maiden. I brought the NFS to the field to meet up with a couple buddies who were also part of the club balsa build contest. When I got to the field there was no wind and a nice temperature. Perfect conditions for a maiden flight. My thought was to fly something else first to warm up the...

Forgot to mention that the landing gear are for a Twist 40. Didn't have any paint on hand, so I covered them in Ultracote... worked pretty well and no one noticed it at the build contest.

    The NotForSale

Here it is pretty much finished. I didn't do a great job documenting the wing mount that I used. I think that was mainly because I was in a rush to get it to the field for the maiden. Essentially I made a Jesus bolt mount in which you slide the FG spars between two pieces of wood that are...

You mentioned that the SFG is an option... I just ordered one yesterday and didn't see an SFG option anywhere. I just went back to the site and still cannot find anything showing whether the SFGs are included or are an option. If I need to order them, can you provide me with the info and or...

Thanks. So many things about this hobby can be a juggle.

The next step was the covering. I was always planning to use yellow on the top and black on the bottom, just like the one inside the magazine and being from Boston, maybe a Bruins logo as well. Instead I looked in my closet to see what I actually had on hand and I changed my mind to using...

    The NotForSale

Finally I built the stab, elevator and rudder along with cosmetics like the wing tips. Once these were complete it was time to sand all the parts down. I used 80 grit to shape everything and then 600 grit to prepare the wood for Monocote. I used the 600 because it's what I had available and...

    Discussion My Tail Wheel Replacement

You just have to use rudder to steer and it's fine on the ground. You cannot tell the difference on takeoff and landing regardless of wind and I can still turn on a dime while taxiing , it just takes a bit more throttle/rudder during higher wind. I'll give up the slow tight ground steering for...

    Discussion My Tail Wheel Replacement

So far no. The one I have used the longest (9 months) has a flat spot on the bottom but nothing serious. Since I use CA to hold them in place, debonder should work fine to remove one if necessary. I started out using 450 helicopter booms. They worked fantastic but were pricy, which is why I...

    The NotForSale

Next came the ailerons and wings. The ailerons were real easy to make and it's funny because I thought they would be very difficult (not sure why). I used plenty of magnets to hold them steady and tacked all the parts in place with CA, then when they were dry I removed them from the board and...

    The NotForSale

I worked on multiple parts at the same time so that the glue could dry while doing something else, but the first piece to be finished was the fuselage. Initially it just had the structural parts and the cutouts for the wings. Then I made the top hatch and got it ready for when the wings were...

    The NotForSale

I decided to use a magnetic board to do the assembly with and was very pleased with it. The magnets held the parts vertical for me while they dried. I was worried about making too many pinholes in the wood as I was putting things together and the magnetic board made it super easy to adjust...
