Links to other sites

From time to time we have issues pop up where we have to enforce a policy and in return I end up looking like an a**hole to people. This morning it happened again so here's a quick clarification just to keep things on the up and up.

The short version of the policy is that we welcome links to other sites.

The long version is that we don't welcome links to other sites if the links are being posted solely to redirect traffic from GiantScaleNews.com to some other start-up or struggling forums site. In fact, links to forums sites are generally discouraged unless the link is meant to contribute to a conversation that is already happening at GiantScaleNews.com and isn't meant to simply redirect the conversation elsewhere.

Everyone here has actually been great about this but there are the occasional events where I'm forced to act on this policy and it usually isn't pretty.

Please post questions or comments if you read what I wrote and would like further clarification. I'm not perfect, I don't have all of the answers, and I often rely on your input to improve my understanding of things. I'm more than happy to consider other points of view if you're willing to make your case in a reasonable way.

FWIW - When I am on that other site and want to send people here I do it via a TinyURL link - never gets caught in the filters. That could happen here as well

You guys gotta do what you gotta do!! GSN is a great place to hang out and I for one understand that traffic is how you keep the site going and posting links to other forums to divert that traffic is not good..

Luckily, I don't run into that problem much because about the only sites I visit anymore are GSN and Facebook lol

You have my full support Bartman. Sometimes it's a fine line. But I feel you and Sleepy make the right call more often than not.

Our regular members aren't the problem nor are the new members that are showing up to learn and join in the fun. The problems come mostly from people that join with the intent to use the site almost entirely to promote their own gigs. I get it, it's an inviting opportunity but there's a lot of hard work in every megabyte of the site.

I was thinking of posting a link but my first thought was that I would ask you first via a message. I feel it very correct that Amin's have the final say so. What you are doing now works well, why spoil a good thing.
