Some used to say to always breakin using a non synthetic oil, like lawn boy ashlesss, but others say to use redline all the way. I think it just extends the break in process by using redline and making it take 3-4 gallons instead of 1-2, so I expect I'll deal with it a while longer (the oily black mess). It's quite thick though, so I think I'll swap to 40:1 also.

We've been using a combination of Penzoil Dino and Stihl ultra up here. 40:1 +\- and I haven't seen or heard of a big soot problem.

My 70 runs on 40:1 stihl and it was making black soot all season. The twin burns more fuel and is less efficient for the air mass moved through it so that is probably the issue. The VVRC-40 is a bit messy as well and the PTE-72 was as bad as a glow plane.

So is the black Redline related or the DA-70 related? I ask because I started using Redline with my VVRC 40 and it was pretty black. My DA-60 was not to bad but I used Stihl HP with it and I bought it used from DA.
