Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

Len, got a pic? I could try to recreate your paint scheme if it isn't too complicated (I suck at painting).

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

That's all for this week. I head home in a couple days and hope to keep rocking on the build. I bought mini size servos for the canards, but they proved too big so I need to trade them in on some HS-85mg micros like the kit suggests. The rudder servos are HS-82mg and I have Futaba 3010 servos...

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

Starting the servo installation with the rudders. The rudder servos mount to the wingtip plates, making the wingtips easily removable. The kit includes a servo saver type setup that allows the servo to pull the rudder horn, but not push it. A spring is used to center the rudder when the servo...

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

The main gear is predrilled but the gear mount on the fuselage needs to be drilled for the bolts. The gear attaches with a washer and locknut on the inside of the fuse, which becomes tricky for the rear bolts since there is a former right in the middle of the gear plate. A quick test fit of...

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

The kit comes with fiberglass and microballoons for reinforcing the fuselage to former joints. I used thinned epoxy for the fiberglassing. Kinda turned out meh but the joints are plenty strong now. I still have to reinforce the two formers in the nose. The manual says it's very important to...

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

All control surfaces are hinged. I bought some pinned flat hinges but did a crappy job keeping glue off the pivot points, so by the time I got to the ailerons I said hell with it and used the included CA hinges. I hate hinging. Controls on this plane are scale and tiny!

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

Here is the nose gear mount. Very beefy setup. Looking at the CG, nearly half of the model's weight will be on the nosewheel. This is much more than a typical tricycle gear setup. A hole will be drilled in the belly to allow the brass unit to slide into the mount.

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

Got some more work done on the Velocity last week. The nose gear is a very beefy double-strut unit that gets soldered into a brass pivot unit. This will stick outside the scale nosewheel pant and fairing, but there will be quite a bit of weight on the nosewheel so the manufacturer found it...

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

Here's a shot of the winglet being epoxied to its mounting plate. The instructions call for epoxying the winglet to the plate first, then drilling the screw holes and mounting the plate to the wing. If I had done that, the winglets would have had a bit of a gap between them and the wing tips...

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

I found an online Kitplanes review on a modified (more HP) Velocity that, in a very polite way, said it's a fast, efficient plane that handles like a turd. Fortunately I have my transmitter sticks adjusted just the way I like them, so no worries about control harmony here.

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

Ryan, my plan for this plane is to go with a Rimfire 1.20 electric setup on 6S lipo. There are several cooling vents in the top of the fuselage into the cowl area, and my plan is to place the ESC there with some baffling to direct the airflow over the ESC, then onto the motor. The kit does...

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

I wanted to get an idea of the fit and quality of the parts, so a mock-up was the first thing I accomplished. In general, the parts are pretty good quality. The formers in the fiberglass fuse weren't glued in very well, but the kit actually includes some fiberglass and microballoons so you can...

Scale Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL

I was at the Northwest Hobby Expo earlier this month, and this kit caught my eye at the swap meet. It's an Experimental Aircraft Models 80" Velocity XL, later sold by Kondor Model Products. I remember seeing the EAM ads a while back and thought they had a neat lineup of scale homebuilts, and...

    So.....

Nothing too top secret on the prototype, there have been a couple making public appearances. The big trick, I think, is to find a setup that is ideally suited for it. Jeff, would love to have gone yesterday, but half the day was spent airlining home from a three week business trip to Ohio...

    So.....

I'm finally back at the job I had before my big layoff. No more working the murderous schedule that I've been working for the last few years. I still have baby to take care of, but I also have more time off from work, and there's a PAU prototype that I'm finishing up (kinda) that needs some...

    Hello

I think that was the exact moment I realized that there was no need to actually have the gliders in the air to set up that shot. But we did fly them, like a boss I might add. That shot is 100% legit.

Megan's ratio causes cylinder detonation. Great power for about an hour and a half, then the engine crashes out for the night.

    Hello

Hello I'm Ryan and I like long walks on the beach and roughing up suspects. I have a one year old daughter so I don't fly RC evar. Except on occasion the Extreme Gentle Lady in my back yard.

I just signed up to find out what's the best oil to run in my DA-60 and what a good first 3D airplane would be.
