    Welcome, i find that 3ml of hysol in the holes to be the perfect amount with the large robart hinges. Use a drill stop so all the holes are same depth too. Have the hysol E-120hp , but its hard to justify using it from the cost of a tube.

    Myself I like painted gear, gives  nice scale appearance and ties plane together, couple heavy coats of industrial/ auto enamel clear will keep the scratches away for the most part.

    Have fun and hope you do well at the event.  Try aqua-net super hold hairspray ,made all the difference in the world for me, glass smooth.  Maybe do some test pieces to see if yoy like it,  spray till there is a sheen on balsa and let dry overnight,  sand with 600 and done.
