Giant Scale RC Why do this? Seriously??
This "Giant Scale RC" is the only thing I have found that gives me a rush similar to this: I get the adreneline rush, get to build/work on engines, and let the creative juices flow to create something. And I don't have to drive to the midwest to do it. With family obligations comes choices...- Alky6

Made up some tank hold downs to glue into the tank bottom. A bit overkill using a mill, but can't beat using the DRO with some ordinate dimensions! Besides, trying to use a dremel with a rotobit was horrible. Interesting to note when using the very tip of the rotobit and fast feed speeds results...- Alky6

Works awesome!! Had several others, including a really old x-acto one, that don't work very well and are really frustrating. This one with the adjustment screws on each side of the blade make sneaking up on the correct cut depth really easy and it actually stays in adjustment. Probably will buy...- Alky6

Drilled holes to mount the landing gear. Glued the leading edge (1/2"x1" balsa) to the wings and fitted the root ribs, then started sanding the wings. The leading edge was glued on with weldbond glue. Talked with Al and he recommended the razor plane from Master Airscrew. An $8 or so investment...- Alky6

No need. I will oblige. I got the complete package including mount from VVRC. It is a pinnacle medium canister. I am getting a couple hundred more RPM with the can over the stock muffs. Super quiet as well. Doesn't bother my neighbors. I really like how it performs and am comfortable to go fly...- Alky6

Hopefully these show up ok. I used 6mm black depron to make the baffles. Cuts and sands easy, just remember to use foam safe glue (I used CA to glue them in place)! Essentially they are square baffles. The last pic is the aluminum dam and louvres that seems to work the best for cooling in this...- Alky6

I damaged the cowl - long story - so I used it as an opportunity to play before finalizing on a new one. Duct tape was used to open holes and close them. The pipe tunnel was open originally and had louvers there. Tried moving the aluminum dam all over but found it works best in this first pic...- Alky6

What does your air exit look like? I also found that the scale carb hole below the output shaft made a huge difference in cooling. Blocking that off made about a 20 degree difference. Not that all cases would perfom that way, but it allowed too much air not doing any cooling to use up the exit...- Alky6

Mine is baffled-on an EF78 Extra 300. It really didn't run consistently and was a booger to jet until I did baffle it. Cylinders also run evenly after baffling. Just directed flow from the inlets of the cowl over the fins. Have a deflector in front of the opening on the bottom of the cowl.- Alky6

Interesting topic Dimes. Some things to consider - most revolve around inspection and fatigue failures and as I am sure you know this... Wood has an infinite life as long as the yield stresses are not exceeded. Steel has an infinite life if the stresses do not exceed 50% of yield. With aluminum...- Alky6

I don't know about safer. Much heavier for sure. On my race boats, we turn a 6.5" 4-blade propeller (steel alloys) about 10,000 rpm (they are super-cavitating, or surfacing - and run half in half out of the water), therefore have much higher cyclical loading than an aircraft propeller, but...
