Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Installed the dash, the original aluminum dash panel tucked under the boot cowl and the cowl was rolled over to finish the edge, I had planned paint the dash and the boot cowl with flat black paint. The dash from SAC is a little less than 1/8" thick so I need to finish off this area with...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Thank you gentlemen. The paint masks worked great, again a learning experience. The numbers were rather easy to remove the masks, the emblem on the other hand was a little tricky. Some of the paint pulled off on the right side so I left the left side dry for two days, then rubbed out the top...

The fuselage and right wing. There are a few bleeds that will require some work, pretty sure I can clean with rubbing compound. There's only one on the fuselage but the wing has more since are so many angle joints. All in all I'm happy. Didn't get to the left wing, the paint was drying and...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

It's always better the second time around! Thanks Mike. Put a coat of base yellow on the numbers and around the tape on the fuselage to minimize bleed through. Didn't do the Aeronca emblem or the numbers on the rubber because they are rather small and was worried about excessive buildup. They...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Did a little lathe work tonight. Going to put the first hub cap I made a while ago in the prototype bucket, this one is much better, I bought 1" long disc this time around and it worked out better because the part was held better and I learned from the mistakes made on the first one. I started...

Got the second wing all masked off and ready for 7AC orange, also prepared the paint masks for use, picked all the letters and lines off the mask, no. 11 blade and tweezers. My grandson is here tomorrow so color on Tuesday.

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Got a little tired of masking this morning, had two more numbers to do so I decided to assemble the tail wheel. It's all together with hex head bolts and all metal locking nuts. It's a porker but scale.

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

This took the better part of today minus a few hours watching my grandsons play soccer this afternoon. One more wing to go, then mask the fuselage and rudder.

Pulled the fine line tape off after after taking these photos, looks good not much bleed through. Ended up taking the fan out and cranking up the heat in the house to speed the drying.

In between coats, hopefully the next will be the last. Drying a little slow today, on the cooler side. Orange on Tuesday? Need to mask the wing for the N numbers. I had masked off the area where the orange section is at, never done it this way before, always painted the base color then the...

Got a couple of deliveries yesterday, the white Ekoprime arrived and I sprayed a coat this morning, a little sanding with 320 and it will be ready for color. Also received a shipment from McMaster Carr, longer bolts for the prop and heavy hub, 200 1mm cotter pins ( already lost a few for flying...

    Yippee! What the postman brought

All the equipment is home made. Here is the vacuum table, 1/4" plywood bottom, 1 x 3 sides and the peg board top, two shop vac's are connected in series to the table. You need a buck to form the sheet over, this need to substantial, in my case I made the buck from a less than perfect canopy...

    Yippee! What the postman brought

The postman brought two 4X8 sheets of .040" PETG, going to do some vacuum forming. Just installed a p&id controller on the oven, need to play around a little.

Sanded the fuselage three times today, different light during the day brings out more flaws. Sanded and polished the aluminum tailwheel hub, it came out nice. It was a real bugger to get the rubber off the hub, lubed it up with dish soap to install, went on much easier. The main wheels loose...
