What you have is silver bearing solder, what you need is silver solder and flux. It is higher in silver content. Technically it is call silver brazing but most old timers call it silver solder, sorry for the confusion. You can buy it at the local welding supply store , your local hardware...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

After the top sheeting was dry, the wing was flipped over and the strut and jury strut fittings were installed. Then the bottom sheeting was installed in the same manner, weights were used on the main spar and leading edge. ammonia was used as well. The comment i made about National Balsa was...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Up to this point I've been trying to keep both wing halves at the same completion level, I just realized we have a club meeting on Monday evening and hope to take one wing to the meeting for "show and tell." I'm working on the left now, I installed the top leading edge sheeting, I got the...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Yes the retirement is working out great, I put a shift in today on the build. I did spend a few hours on the snowblower however, it hasn't ran in several years so I had to give the fuel tank a Drano treatment followed by a Muratic acid bath. Hopefully it will run tomorrow. Snow coming on...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Not a problem, that's what these forums are for. Back to the build, I got the 1/4" balsa leading edges and the 1/4" balsa aileron trailing edges installed on both wings. I did manage to get the wing bow installed on the left wing. There are a lot of different angles going on there, I was...

I was quite pleased with the outcome the trailing edge is straight, I didn't have to sand any of the fits. Here is a sample of the result

The trail edges are 1/4" dowel, I plan to cover the plane with Stits fabric and I would expect the shrinking process to deform the trailing edge. I dadoed a 1/8" groove 1/8" deep on the 1/4" dowels on the tablesaw. The ends of the ribs were finished in a make shift router table. I used 1/8"...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

I completed the cabin roof section to the point where I can glue the wings together. I wanted to slide the roof section onto wing spars while gluing the root rib to ensure everything will fit, it is a little snug and will require some sanding but all in all I think it will work well. You can...

The gear on the BUSA Cub and Super Cub is silver soldered, similar size tubing. That is why I suggested using it. Cleaning the flux is a real pain however.

I would silver solder rather than braze.

It is 52" long, I just use .025" mild steel MIG wire. Runs about 7 amps at 12 volts. It will cut both EPS and the wall sheeting foam board.

It's a 5" throat, takes a 64" blade, Dayton brand. You can see it in the photo nest to the disc sander. My wife bought it for me in 1980. It's just like the small 4"X6" band saws that Harbor Freight sells except it is only a vertical saw. I have a 14" Delta band saw but it is set up in the...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

The wing assembly has begun! I glued the rib stubs onto the main spars. I still have a few details to resolve for the aileron hinges, I want to do all the drilling for the hinges on the drill press before the wings are glued up. I have the spar boxes built and need to assemble the cabin roof...

With a metal cutting band saw. It's not big, 5", but has served me well over the last 40 years. It has built many planes.

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

I spent yesterday and today making the metal parts for struts and ailerons. I use the disc sander to put the radius on the ends of the straps, just rotate the part about the axis. The straps are 16 gage steel. The aileron hinges were made out of 1/4" X 1/4" aluminum bar rather than two steel...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

I laid out the rib position so that both wings will be the same. The wings will be built to lines rather than the other wing drawing. You can see the tongues on the spars at the bottom of the photo
