    You shouldn't use a pencil tip on Deans, as it takes too long to get the heat into the tab, and will destroy the alignment of the Deans. EC3's are not too much of a problem as the wires are soldered into the "cup" while outside of the plastic. If the hobby shop owner is using them on Deans, then...

    As to thickness of wire and cell...I recently bought some 4S packs that came with 8AWG wire on them....I was like..."you have to be kidding me!!!"...but they are 45C batteries... And....hopefully the soldering iron you bought has a "chisel" tip, and not a "pencil" tip. A pencil tip is fine...
