Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

A different approach was used to build the right aileron. A spine was made from 1/8" lit ply and lighted with 2" holes. This removed almost half the weight. The 1/4" dowel trailing was glued on. The bottom side received 1/16" plywood to simulate the ribs while the top side were made from...

Once the left aileron was mounted I noticed that the ribs did not align with the wing ribs, I was considering starting over. I had already laid out the fuselage plans on the bench and was making up a material list for the rest of the build. I also found the book by Paul Matt and purchased it...

Sport Bud Nosen (!!!) 1/4 Scale Citabria Build! Woo hoo!

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

The left aileron is done, took longer than expected. Rather than set up the router table again, the ribs were pre-drilled for the trailing edge dowel then cut out. A 1/4" rod was inserted into the drilled hole, then the cut lines were laid out. The left wing is basically complete, still need...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Took the left wing out tonight to my club meeting, kind of odd this old right winger taking out a left wing, but hay I married a left winger 44 years ago and we're still going strong. One of the club members ask how much does the wing weight? Didn't know so when I got home I checked and left...

Have you ever tried strip planking method for sheeting? See pdf below. This is my Cherokee 140 that was redone several years ago. If I did it again I would increase the sheeting thickness by one size then sand a little more. All in all it worked well.

I will check it out. The leading edge and wing are roughed it. It did take some time sanding the wing bow since the radius is constantly changing. Hope the second one matches the first!

What you have is silver bearing solder, what you need is silver solder and flux. It is higher in silver content. Technically it is call silver brazing but most old timers call it silver solder, sorry for the confusion. You can buy it at the local welding supply store , your local hardware...

After the top sheeting was dry, the wing was flipped over and the strut and jury strut fittings were installed. Then the bottom sheeting was installed in the same manner, weights were used on the main spar and leading edge. ammonia was used as well. The comment i made about National Balsa was...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Up to this point I've been trying to keep both wing halves at the same completion level, I just realized we have a club meeting on Monday evening and hope to take one wing to the meeting for "show and tell." I'm working on the left now, I installed the top leading edge sheeting, I got the...

Scale RCM 1/3 Scale Champ Build

Yes the retirement is working out great, I put a shift in today on the build. I did spend a few hours on the snowblower however, it hasn't ran in several years so I had to give the fuel tank a Drano treatment followed by a Muratic acid bath. Hopefully it will run tomorrow. Snow coming on...
