Scale 1/4 Scale 148" Shrike Commander

Winter is coming.... So, it's time to start building something. My last project had a structural failure in flight, so I'm going to be paying a lot of attention to structural integrity while still worrying about weight.

I ordered a scaled up short kit from Sunset Models for the Palmer Shrike Commander.

The formers are going to be light ply instead of balsa (with as much trimming as I can do to lighten them up).

Engines and gear have not been decided yet. Most likely will be a Commander 500 like Bob Hoover used to fly. Haven't decided on a paint scheme yet.

Glad I have some viewers!!

One of the problems with sizing up plans is having to figure out the new sizes for things like stringers, spars, etc.

It is looking like the stringers for the fuselage will be 1/8" square. Of course, it's one of the few sizes that I don't have much of. Looks like the local hobby shop will get some business from me.

I am looking at the plans and wondering how to begin. I will probably just put the fuselage together on the top view to start. There are some things that will need to be angled a specific way and I will have to skip over them until I have a few stringers and formers in place and set.

I should probably mention that I am not a master builder. Very far from it! I say it now so that you don't have to wonder later on if I have any idea what I'm doing. The answer is yes, but only a little.

I got an email today that my two 55cc engines with the autostarts attached to them did not do very well in the Skymaster crash. the rear engine did a lot better than the front engine of course. I can probably get that one repaired and working again pretty quick. The front engine sounds like it is totaled. It needs a new everything almost. I had planned on using those engines in this airplane if they made it out okay. I really like the idea of using autostarts in these airplanes.

Despite the wingspan, it really is not going to be that big of an airplane. I certainly don't think it will weigh the 46 Pounds that the skymaster weighed. I think that I can probably get away with two 35's, but I haven't decided yet. The cowls are not that big and will likely require some cutting in order to fit any reasonable engine inside of them. Although I could go with a twin cylinder 40cc.
