Updating this thread,

We've been slow this week, but something is getting done. The center section spar cap has been epoxied on completing what we think was the most difficult part of this build.

We created some short ribs and installed them behind the spar in the engine compartment area. The cut out is for our two 8oz fuel tanks to mount. The tanks will be at an angle to create a low point for the cluck since we needed to mount them sideways.

Next up is wing sheeting.

To glue up the sheeting, we true up the edges and tape them tightly together with masking tape on one side.
Flip the sheets over and hinge it open to apply Elmers white glue, lay them flat and wipe off any excess glue.
Once the glue dries, the joints can be sanded smooth.
White glue sands like chalk, so its well worth the little extra time when making up the sheets.

At this point, we'll probably go ahead and sheet the top surface then put the wing aside for a while. We need to get the fuse constructed so we can fit the wing to the saddle area and be certain we're comfortable with the fit before closing it up completely.

Hey BJ

There are multiple reasons for not sheeting the bottom at this point.
If you see in the pictures, the Sub LE and Sub TE pieces go all the way to the table top, even where it starts to pitch up. This was something we designed into the build so it would hold everything straight and true. Since we will need to plane that smooth with the ribs in order to sheet the bottom, we loose that element.
Also, the bottom being open for now allows us to locate the bearing blocks for bolting the wing to the fuse. We want to build the fuse and locate everything before closing it all up. I suppose you could sheet it now, but there really is no rush, so why bother.

Thanks for following along.

Fuselage construction has begun

It all starts with cutting out the massive formers. My good friend Don traveled down last Thursday evening to stay the night because we were going to the Wrams show on Friday, so we spent the evening cutting fuse parts and applying doubles to the formers all evening. Sure is great to have help and someone to talk with in the shop.
The formers ate up a 4x6 sheet of Italian Poplar!

Once they were made and notched, I made up the keel from two pieces of A/C grade 1/8" ply and a piece of carbon fiber cloth between them. This was epoxied with West Systems and allowed to cure overnight.
Shaping and sanding was done with a vacuum cleaner running to capture any carbon dust!

We attached the fin LE and support, then just for the heck of it attached some formers for a photo.
Next I'll build a keel jig and mount the keel solid, then the real attachment will begin.
