Where do you live? Maybe someone here will know a club close to you that is a bit more active. Having someone to fly with will make the learning process a lot easier and you will improve a lot faster because it is hard to correct mistakes you don't know your making if you are flying on your own. Even if you don't make it to some of the contests in your area, still learning the sequences will make you a better pilot and you will be amazed how you can learn.
As far as learning the sequence, taking the first couple maneuvers at a time has always worked well for me but another item that is very useful is a stick airplane/practice airplane so you can go through the maneuvers while reading them and be able to visualize them at the same time. It will help you visualize the orientation that the airplane should be in during the maneuver and you can all determine which way may be best for you to roll or do your maneuvers. If you don't have a stick plane a cell phone can come in handy when in a jam,lol.
