A real R/C story

To start this off I'm not a writer or a poet and a average pilot but I love fly-in's and the people you meet. Last October we (The Dan River R/C Flyers) decided to hold another fly-in.
Our club has only about 15 members but share in the love for this hobby. I had approached the county administer about the use of the full scale airport because our local field was to small
and had very little parking. After about 2 weeks of phone calls and meeting with him, He agreed to let us use the airport as long as a few requirements were meet. This was a good move on our part 2014 was the best year that we have had. Over 40 pilots showed up flying everything from helicopters to large jets.

What makes this story is the fact that this hobby gives back or the new saying this day and age is (pay it foward). I have a 11 year old friend that goes with me to the flying field. He has always had a passion for flying but just never had a chance. Saturday I asked him if he would be interested in helping me sell tickets and what do you know the first person he asked was Bill Coada, Ray Chenault, Bob Wagner, Mike Hall and Ron Hall. Bill quickly jumped up and said that's not the way you sell tickets you have to talk louder and make them by tickets. Bill took Zak up and down the flight line and sure enough they sold over $300 in tickets but they also became friends. Shortly after the tickets were sold a few of us went out to eat at the local restaurant and Zak's name came up. Somebody said we have to do something for this kid and we all agreed. We all pitched in and we had enough money for a plane. Bill called Roto's Hobby Shop (about 30 miles away) and told the owner what we were planning and he agreed to meet us with a trainer.

Soon after I called his mother and told here what we were doing and asked her if She could bring Zak at the fly-in Sunday about 1:00. Bill and my self walked up and down the flight line Sunday morning and told everyone what we were doing and the pilots came through. Not only did we buy a plane we had enough money to get all of the support equipment. Now Zak has three flight on the plane. So come out this year and fly with Zak. That's what the hobby is about!!

I am going to insert a few photo.s If you have any question let me know.

Good story Mark. I wish I could have made it to that fly in. Funny you say that about Bill teaching him how to sell stuff. He got me on the first fly-in last year. LOL
Will Zak be at the spring fly in. If his skills are up to snuff I will let him take one of my sporty little 3D foamys for a flight.
