Hey Rob,

The Old Girl looks good bolted to the fire wall and I LOVE the hatch you made for the bottom of the fuse. . . . . . . :yesss: . My Buddy is in the process of finishing up his S12 as well, but he likes to tease me by not showing me any pictures of it. . . . . :ugh!:.

My "Red Eagle" Pitts with the wrapped headers leaves absolutely no residue on the airframe. Pre heat the oil and adjust the pump appropriately for a clean burn, simple as that. A little over two years and have not had to clean it other than for dust collected while in the trailer. And the three other airframes with smoke are the same way...
Seriously!!! Well that is good to hear. When you say preheat the oil, are you running a coil around the mufflers? Or do you have a more elaborate way to do this?

Another 12 hours of covering and I am just about tired. I finished up the trim on the top and bottom of the upper and lower wings. I think I like them.... But will make my ultimate decision on that subject when I see them mounted to the plane. Lol.....

I will start cutting the 39000 miles of silver 1/8" striping tomorrow. For now though, just a couple of pics and a good night to all.

Definitely need pre heaters. My ultimate and my Pitts never have anything more than a light film of residue on the bottom of the stab that takes all of 20 seconds to clean.

The pre heaters I made aren't really that efficient either, as they are just a brass tube with some brass mounting tabs soldered to them and bolted to the side of the muffler. Then a small price of smoke tubing goes from the end of the tube to the ejector. I have some plans for an ejector/pre heater that I want to try when the Krier Is done.

I think the injector can do alot to, if you can get the oil to atomize (or close to it) it will flash off faster.

Anyway, don't be afraid of smoke. Once you get it set up and working right, the benefits outweigh the weight penalty :)

Damn you.... you're going to make me want to put smoke on the Pitts. I'm just wondering where I can put a tank. And what size? Maybe a 16 in the can tunnel???

I use 1/8" copper tube, wrap several time's around the muffler or header as close to the head exit as possible. The end of the tube that goes into the header gets closed up and I drill a 1/64 hole on the side, mark the hole side and make sure it points in the direction of the exhaust flow. I had a conversation with Super-Dri about our app and wrapping, they said in our application we can't over heat the oil so wrap away. If your running a standard or pitts style exhaust just wrap the can.

This flight was a test run of a new prop, which was to big and cut the rpm way down-about 1400rpm, but it shows the smoke. This is with a Sullivan Skywriter at minimal run and two clicks above minimal run and several wraps of the preheater. At this point a 24 oz oil tank will last about eight minutes.
Since then I have also added baffles to warm the engine. At that time the max running temp was 190°, now it is aroune 240° and the smoke is even thicker and longer lasting.
