Modifying / Detailing an ARF for Fun Scale or Pro Am in Scale masters.

Back in late 2009 I was living in central Illinois where the winter is really looooooooooooonnnnngg. So I got an idea to take a Top Flite B-25 and dress her up a bit. Turns out you can get very deep into detailing these airplanes out and its hard to stop and say its "good" enough. Fun scale class doesn't have a static score but I'm convinced when you roll that bad boy up by the judges and its all decked out you are getting some extra credit. I have not flown this airplane a bunch but it really is fun. Going to a fly in with an ARF and having people not know what brand/ manufacture made the airplane is a welcome change to the sea of identical birds. If anyone has had any inclination to try scale out DO IT! The contest are very laid back and a really good time.

Aircraft details: Top Flite B-25, OS FS.70 Surpass Engines, Master Airscrew 3-blade 11x7 Props, Futaba radio gear, Robart Retracts, and 3300 Mha LIFE battery. The attached pictures are from the Southwest Regional Scale Masters Qualifier in Ft. Worth, Texas. It was windy as hell but lots of IMAC flying really helped me out. I was lucky enough the win the Pro/Am Pro class. Back in 2010 I flew it at the AMA Scale Nationals in Fun Scale Open and placed 5th. So lets see some ARF's you guys have modified for scale contest.

I said to sleepy this afternoon we had to do Pimp-My-ARF threads and this is a great example. I was talking more about peeling off the stripes and colors to do custom trim and colors but tricking out an ARF to be competitive in Scale contests is another way to do it.

Nice job.

I flew my first scale contest last year and competed in Fun Scale Novice.

But, during the time after that contest and this spring we lost my dad's Tigermoth ARF. I was in a holding pattern waiting on a developing scale ARF project from one of my sponsors, but I had run out of time to have a plane ready. My home club was hosting their first ever scale contest in May.

I decided to use one of my Aerobatic planes by tweeking a few graphics and such to match the full scale counter-part.

This is what I came up with.

The plane is a 108" OMP Yak-55M. This time I competed in Fun Scale Expert. I was not expecting to fly Aerobatic scale, but it worked out OK with the time frame I had to prepare it in.

as of now I am back in the same holding pattern. We may decide to do a Balsa USA 1/3 scale Sopwith kit over the winter

i have seen jasons b-25 in person and was a-mazed at what a great job he did on it. there was no way for my semi untrained eye to know that it wasnt scratch built. lots of detail and it wasnt over done like a lot of people tend to do.

hubb, yours looks excelent as well!

Hubb, Very nice work and great example. With a little creative thinking you can convert just about any ARF to fit the Fun Scale rules.

Sorry to hear your guys Tiger Moth found the expiration date. That was a sweet looking bird :-(
