I have owned both the Addiction and the Addiction X, suspect my experience will be directly applicable to the XL.
First, Bipenut' suggestion is a good one, learning 3D on a very good EPP plane is what I have found to be the right starting place. My personal all round fav is the Laser. Make you mistakes with something like this, then when you have high confidence, move to the PA planes.
PA planes are beautifully contructed, light, and stiff.
They are lighter wing loading, which I find positive, others like planes that carry a little more energy in some manuevers.
If you can fly something on the TH practice plane, the PA plane will do it as well, but it has a different character. I love flying both.
They don't like "dirt naps" though repairs and replacement parts are available
