I have owned both the Addiction and the Addiction X, suspect my experience will be directly applicable to the XL.

First, Bipenut' suggestion is a good one, learning 3D on a very good EPP plane is what I have found to be the right starting place. My personal all round fav is the Laser. Make you mistakes with something like this, then when you have high confidence, move to the PA planes.

PA planes are beautifully contructed, light, and stiff.

They are lighter wing loading, which I find positive, others like planes that carry a little more energy in some manuevers.

If you can fly something on the TH practice plane, the PA plane will do it as well, but it has a different character. I love flying both.

They don't like "dirt naps" though repairs and replacement parts are available

Thanks for the info. PA is currently discounting the Addy XL by about $107 right now for the Toledo show which is part of why I'm on this subject so strenuously. I will give the Laser a hard look.

If you can afford it, use the 107 you save to cover most of the cost of the laser and get both

Hi Aaron. I agree with what Alan said above me. I can't speak for the XL addiction , as I only have the original small one. What he said about it having a " different character " ...is spot on! They are very fun flying little planes. I'm sure the XL will move slightly slower then the smaller original version. It can be a very " floaty " little bird , and at the same time , it can be a " twitchy " little bird. Hard to explain , but when you get into larger aircraft they almost seem to " auto correct " themselves a little when there is a slight breeze out. The addiction doesn't really follow that rule....it goes exactly where you put it , but a strong breeze can maybe put it in some awkward positions....really quick....and it doesn't really auto correct from anything.

The addiction took some getting used to , but once I did get used to it...was a very fun little bird to fly.

I will say that I also own the little 58" Extra MX....and that little airplane is incredible to say the least. If it's setup correctly it will float around extremely well and be very responsive to controller inputs just as good as some of your 30-50cc birds out there. In fact I've flown some 50cc birds out there in the past that were WAY more twitchy then that little extra. I built mine , fully ready to fly with 5S 2600mah Hyperion battery and it came in at exactly 4.04lbs. I wanted something that was affordable and cheap to learn a lot of my low rollers , hovers , ect...and this plane did nothing but hone my skills. And then when I was flying my 30% - 35% birds....it just made them feel even better.

Kind of odd to say , but that little 58" extra flew like a dang 35% bird on days when there wasn't much wind. One of the best little flying birds I've ever owned. And with that being said....later down the road when you want to get into the bigger aircraft. I think something like the little 58" extra would be a great training tool.

Thank you jeffro, I have definitely noticed all the traits of which you and the others have mentioned by flying it on the sim. If it flies in real life like it does on the Phoenix sim then it truly is an altogether different beast. I will look at the Extra MX as well. Thanks.

No problem Aaron. I really miss this hobby a lot. And wish I had more time in my life to actually get out and actually fly. I'm a construction contractor and about 9- 10 months out of the year I stay extremely busy. With the spare time I have I'm usually in the gym or riding my bikes when the weather is good. Right now , I have my RM 250 stripped to the frame and doing a complete overhaul and will be back riding again in about 2 weeks. Between that sport and my work....seems I never have any spare time to fly. But gawd I swear....there is no other hobby on this planet I would rather do then fly my planes! Have fun with , enjoy it , enjoy the building aspect of it , and never get to attached to a certain airplane.....most of the time they will meet their doom haha.

Which is fine....because you won't have to worry about selling it. And you just made more room for your next new bird!

Good luck and have fun with this hobby. It is a total blast if you don't take things to seriously and remember why you're out there in the first place....having fun and hanging with your buddies!

Good luck with the bike. I've done that in the past and love it but the old bod won't take it anymore. Thank goodness for ARF and foam models. I always recommend those over kits to beginners due to that emotional attachment we all develop during the building process. Take care and be safe. Construction is no party and can be very dangerous.
