Resurrecting an Old Favorite - 3DHS 87" Extra SHP

This was my first giant scale (actually my 2nd as I crashed my first one of these on its 2nd flight...duh). Bought her in '08 and flew it for four years. Got my feet wet in IMAC with it. Great flying plane....but sadly strained her thru some trees .

Anyway....I hung on to all the bits and pieces (from both of the SHP's). Most recently I used the DL50 in the Aerobeez Edge, but had a deadstick and it didn't fair well during the landing. Although it's probably repairable, it wasn't a very good flying plane.....so I decided to resurrect an Extra SHP!!! What the heck....nothing to lose except some time, and I'll get back an old favorite to fly in the back yard!

A couple of years ago I bought the motorbox repair kit from 3SHD. Here it is snapped together (minus a few pieces) sitting in front of the better of the 2 fuselages I have. This kit will make the resurrection WAY easier than having to scratch all that together!!!

When I was stripping the Aerobeez I discovered the cause of the deadstick. Lesson learned.....REPLACE ALL old tubing when redoing a plane with old equipment!!!!! The pulse line was the ONLY one I didn't do....

Here the motorbox kit is glued up with Hysol 9462 epoxy. Great stuff, doesn't run and very strong....although long cure times. By buddy Terry also suggested Hysol E20HP which cures faster.

Also, since the datum line on most, if not all of these aerobats is the top of the fuse where the canopy sits.....I used some ply and scrap lumber to make up a flat "bench" the exact length of the canopy base in order to sit the fuse on (upside down of course). This will help keep things squared up and straight during the reconstruction of the missing elements.

Looking good Earle. That one is back before we met which is indeed some years ago by now. Always impressed by your building skills and tenacity to take on projects that most would pass up for being too difficult.

Those trees looked very similar to the ones that Capt Jack wound up sitting in. Perhaps they are stalking you
