The Bonehead Files

The concept is pretty simple: Post your favorite bonehead moves so we can all laugh at them together or maybe even learn something. Sort of in the same spirit as ATTF's "The Dumbest Thing I Did".

Let the stupidity flow!

Ok, I'll go first:

I had a playdate with AeroHeadTW (you should introduce yourself, BTW) this morning and we were chatting while I swapped batteries in my plane to get ready for the next flight. As soon as I took off, I noticed I had really bad power. Of course I had pulled the classic bonehead move of putting back the old battery. Never chat and change batteries, right?

I was losing power really fast and I needed to get the plane down immediately. I was flying down wind along the runway and I wasn't sure I had enough juice to turn around, so I decided to attempt a downwind landing. It was pretty windy, so I was bracing for a rough one. Line up... try my best to slow her down and... *BOOOOIING* The familiar sound of the covering acting as a huge drum. A split second later, I saw debris flying from the tail section. My heart sank and I could hear Tim shout "oh noooooo!".

As I approached the plane, I was prepared for the worst, but I noticed it was sitting nicely on the gear with no visible damage. Strange! I could swear I saw pieces flying!

Upon closer examination we found out what had happened. As I landed, my tail wheel clipped a HUGE pile of dog poo perfectly in half. The entire tail section, including the rudder servo was covered in dog feces. I could post a picture, but I don't think you need the visual. Suffices to say I could probably make out what brand of dog food the pooch had for breakfast based on what was spread across the tail of my plane. The debris I saw flying wasn't plane parts, but digested Purina Dog Chow.

Moral of the story: The mighty spirits of RC work in mysterious ways. The punishment isn't always what we expect it to be, but they always make sure we're punished.

Talk about a crappy day at the field!

Funny, I have a very familiar story to tell........... it actually happened just last week. I was flying my UM sukhoi and accidentally flew it into a tree. Luckily, it fell down. Right smack dab right into the fresh pile of crap my dog had kindly left. I unplugged the battery, hosed it off, and gutted it for a future build.

The first night out with my 3DHS 40" EPP Edge I was flying it and having a blast with it. I flew it right up and was going crazy up until I couldn't calm it back down to land. Ultimately I dinked it in hard and had to rebuild the nose on it. The cause... I misread the 4 character naming convention that I'm limited to on my T6EX and had the model set to my 41" Buck Huck which was pretty sensitive because I had the throws up and I was playing with expo. I forgot that the buck Huck was named "Edge" and the EPP Edge is named "540" on my radio. Wrong model settings bit me and I am nominated for my club's 8-ball award for this. I won't win though. There's a better story for that one. I'll tell it if requested.

before i got a dx6 and dx8 i had a dx5. i took my wife and one of my girls to our field. our field is decent size with a 100x50 concrete pad we use for a runway. the field sits atop a tall mountain. around the field is trees for as far as you can see.

had been flying a supercub.it was alil windy and wanted to show my wife how wind affects a plane. i had bought a champ for the kids to fly, so i broke it out to fly in the wind. i binded the dx5 to the champ and started to hand launch it. about that time both my wife and my lil girl started yell and carry'n on, i thought there was a bee or something flying around them so i wasnt paying too much attention to them. finally their noise got my attention and as i turned around i saw my super cub flying off on its own down off the mountain into the trees. it ended up flying about a 2 football fields away from where it originally was on the concrete pad. Ooops! i forgot to unplug the lipo and had binded the tx to the champ and the supercub. Somehow it missed about 6 big trees that would have prolly caused serious damage and landed about 20ft. above ground in an tree that had fell down durning the storms over the summer. so i climb'n i went. if they hadnt had been there. its hard to tell when i would have found the plane. cause after i finished flying to champ i woulda turned around and saw no super cub. would have had no idea where it went. learned a lesson that day hehe. was pretty funny.

I think NJSwede owes a little more of an entry here :)

Ask and I shall deliver!

I was at the GCA flying my EF Laser EXP 48" and I had the field all to myself and no one to show off to, so I figured I should just do slow rolls to practice smoothness of control movements. I was doing pretty well and got excited about how good it looked, so I got a little lower...

That's when the LVC kicked in while the plane was in the KE part of the roll. Trying to roll it back to upright bled off all the speed and down I went with a loud crunchy thud. I thought for sure there would be pieces all over, but despite a hard nose-in and a few cartwheels, it looks like it's fixable.

The bonehead move was, of course, failure to set the battery timer. :cursing:

would like to get gps when i get my first balsa. the way the trees and woods surround our field, if i would ever "lose" a plane , chances of finding it would be slim. i love the automatic timer on the dx8, i have mine set to throttle. youll really like the dx8.
