The 'What did you do in your workshop tonight?' thread

Well been sitting around to long for the parts for the 30cc electric plane so I thought I would start something new. I found a very old kit from greatplanes it is a 1/3 scale Extra kit, very scale and absolutely not a 3 D machine. Pulled it out and opened the box for the first time. I think it is time to build it and I think it will be painted just going to build a scale Extra and do nice Stits paint job on it.

Snoopy looks like a kit from the late 90's , should fly very well alot of gluing though.
You right about that it is one of those older kits the wood is pretty hard as we use to say all the parts are crushed all around the perimeter. It will take a while to get everything separated and cleaned up. But it is not a modern plane it does have some nostalgia to it. Wil put a DA 100 into it. Looking at the fuselage there is no though for canisters, will have to give that some thought to see it can be done or not. One of the first jobs will be splitting the cowl.
I may look around for a second hand Da-100 but I am very apprehensive to do that if I do not know the person

It does remind me of my dad Radiocraft Extra 330 which is now Jtec manufacturing.
His had and open section just behind the cowl for the canisters but it was exposed to the air , it wasn't closed in like todays aircraft are .
I looked inside and man was it built strong alot of thick plywood and plenty of balsa did is very stiff , maybe from age Lol.

I do have the DA 100 that flew in these Radiocraft/Jtec Extra has a low serial number 0260 , I'm guessing from the thrid batch that were produced in 1999 I'm guessing . Just needs some DA love , a once over and probable the carb rebuild and should run very smooth .
It's is what impressed me about the 100 is how smooth it runs , but lacking the HP of it's bigger brother 120 .

Have not looked at the kit or the structure that closely jet it probably is built pretty heavy with a lot of balsa blocks. One thing I did notice is that there is very little light ply but a lot of hard wood sticks. I have one of the newer Da100 but it is in a nice plane and not going to pull it out will most likely get another engine . The 100 you have has a pretty low serial #. And yes I do agree they are smooth do not own a 120 but from what I have read they are pretty hard on a plane but are powerful. Maybe be that this is an older type plane it can tolerate the abuse the 120 dishes out, but I do like the smoothness of the 100 and how easy it is to live with.

Started the wing on the turbo otter. Going one piece. Keeping it light and simple.

Very nice. Do a build thread as I would love to learn more about stits and painting since I just picked up a Balsa USA 1/4 scale Nieuport 17 kit to build at some point.
