Never knew what DLG stood for, not many glider guys in the area. Seen one two weeks ago and was amazed.
It is a elusive sport with acronyms LOL. DLG, HLG, RES, F3K, F5J... ect It's taken me some time to understand some of them.
SS - Slope Soaring (wind hits a pinnacle of some sort to allow moving air to rise upward from it - producing lift
DLG - Discus Launch Glider (Spin around in a circle holding the glider from the wing tip to launch)
HLG - Hand Launch Glider (Usually belly hand launching)
RES - is a series of classes for thermal duration gliders - mostly aero towing
F3K - competition DLG gliding with mostly 1.5m gliders - timed
F5J - competition gliders about 3m, usually 30sec power pod to get to altitude or to use thoughout the flight, scored on many factors - timed. This one is getting a lot of attention as it doesn't require discuss launch/towing/bungie so lots of old timers are taking it on and bringing their skills from RES with them.

What amazes me is since most gliders have a very efficient and thin airfoil - they can fly in very windy conditions successfully. Something that never occurred to me before entering this part of the hobby.

For something so small, there sure are a lot of details LOL!!

I warn you if you get one they are addictive. Well gliders in general are. I was hesitant for so long to get a glider as looked so boring. I quickly learned that it is a huge art to it. Finding thermals is pretty easy but knowing how to react and stay in them is tough.

So much truth to this. The hunt for earthly signs of lift and the struggle to find it in less than ideal conditions will never have you looking at the ground the same. Listen to Joe Wurts talk about low level thermal soaring and you'll see just how far a guy can get into it. It's such an art and to be honest the flying competitions are no joke for serious competitors. Last week I was on a walk with my wife and had to say sorry because I was geeking out looking at how the leaves were moving around us and how the wind was changing directions - signaling a pretty decent thermal. Felt like a kid in the candy store. LOL

Slipped my expensive little Albrecht chuck in my standard drill press Jacob's chuck and turned the drill press into something much more delicate in drilling.

The hand control is wonderful for delicate drilling,
