Your Thoughts on An Electric System for a 73" SU-26

I have a Hacker A50 16L motor. I am looking for a explosive power. I say my friends plane (A Miss Wind) the other day, it was just floating in ground effect with one wheel gliding across the ground, then he went full power and it shot off like a JATO rocket was attached to the plane.. This is what I want. All I need is an ESC, and have been thinking of the CC Edge HV series

I don't have a bunch of money (if I did I would buy that 50cc motorfly for $500), so I have considered a smaller plane for my motor. As I said, I need to get an esc, but I have a bunch of 6S packs I use on my Showtime 90 and Splendor.

So am I just spinning my wheels with the Hacker A50 16L? Will I realize the kind of power I want in that SU-26, if not what is the least expensive route to get where I want to be.

not sure about the explosiveness of that motor, never had one.  I think @Enterprise is a little more familiar with some of the hackers.

However, I love the ZTW line of ESCs, they seem to get more juice to the motor than even a castle can. Have you looked at those? They make a 125a that'd be perfect for a 6s setup (it's what I use with 6s5000 packs on my 70" velox), and very economically priced.

Yes I did look at the Gecko, the HV one that will do 12S. For the money I think this is exactly what I am going to be using. I have strictly used Castle in the past, but I trust what you guys have been saying about these, "unlocking the power"

I can only assume that this esc will play nice with a Hacker.

BTW, I found it for $107 at a place called TPPowerUSA.com. Never heard of them before but unless they nail you on shipping, I think that's a good price.

What motor did the miss wind have? The website says it was built for the A50-16S. I used to have the 14S version of that motor in a Osiris.

The A50-16L is a 10S motor, probably used in pattern planes with a kv of 265. It is rated for 1900 watts, but we all know that Hacker motors are under spec'd. 3DHS used to recommend the 14L and 12L motors, but they have switched to the new A60 series, which are 28 pole motors and put out better power. Basically in 3D, it is better to have short wide motors for torque than long narrow motors like the A50 you have.

You have to ask yourself what batteries you have. Do you want to run 6s, 8s, or 10s. To get the weight right, you are looking at 10s 3300 to maybe 4000. This plane is too small IMHO for a 10s 5000 setup, like in a 2M pattern plane.

200 watts per pound is the general equation for 3D planes, and for just plain stupid power you are going to want 250 watts per pound. Since this plane will probably be in the 11 pound range you are going to need 2700-3000 watts to have ballistic power.

I have a ton of 5000mah 6s packs. I run them in my showtime and my Spelendor. So I guess I need to rethink the motor. The bad thing is I already have the hacker motor. I really had my heart set on the SU-26, so I am kind of at a stand still. It's always about the stupid money. I guess I will start collecting parts and when I have everything I need, I will build it.

Has anyone here had any experience with General Hobby or Rich Yan? Do you think that plane will be a Turd?

1- scorpions are generally heavy compared to hacker and motrolfly, and in this case about 300oz (3/4lb) heavier.

2- 195kv is too low for 6s. You'd need to spin a 22" prop to load it right

3- the most inexpensive motor in this class, that I have owned/used is a Tacon Bigfoot 110. It's really an 8s motor not a 6s, but you might be able to get enough power with a 20x10 or 20x12 prop.

Without a doubt, the best 3D motor on 6s power in my opinion is the Motrolfly 4330, wound for whatever prop you want to use. Just look at the chart on subsonicplanes's site and pick.

While I know it's probably the hardest thing to do, the best advice I can give is to save up the money and get the RIGHT motor, instead of getting the wrong motor sooner.
I think most people say, "buy cheap, buy twice"
