VVRC 21cc getting fitted with a new cowl. Getting there, just some more trimming needed. Can't wait to fire it up!

I'm betting that really thin section of the cowl between the intake and the muffler will eventually crack. I'd reinforce the inside of it with some fiberglass at least to strengthen it up.

Also I agree with the permatex, Terry Wiles did a really good video on how to make the gasket from that stuff:

Looks good. Bit excessive on the permatex though. I just do a light coat on one piece and it seals great.

I just realized I never responded to these. Small engine/muffler makes the permatex layer look larger than it was to be honest. But thanks for the feedback.

The plane flew SO much better with the VVRC 21cc engine than the little RCGF 21cc Twin, it started easier, overall performance was much better/reliable out of the box. I must of had a lemon. Tom at VVRC traded me the RCGF 21cc Twin for one of his VVRC 21cc engines with a couple props.
I didn't realize that was going to be the case, I mistakenly thought my RCGF would be warrantied & returned since I didn't trust the engine (customer satisfaction not that great), and I asked Tom for a RCGF 26cc instead or one of his engines. He said the 26cc would be too big for the cub, and we settled on his engine after a phone call. With all of that said, I'm happy with the customer service at VVRC although I wish things were a bit more clear with the warranty. Tom is a swell guy.
Now the engine was still breaking in, and it did fly well. The H9 15cc carbon cub was a little heavy for my taste and I would have rather used the RCGF 26cc due to all the glorious reviews it's been getting (although not on this airframe) and it might hand start a little easier. Just my 2 cents.
Someone offered me some cash for just the airframe on this model and I decided to strip it and let it go. Just wasn't the bush plane I dreamt it would be for my missions and little escapades. SO it has a new home now. . . And is being converted to electric by it's new owner.

I bought the RCGF 21cc twin for mine based on your video and this thread. Mine runs like a clock. Maybe you got a bum one?

Thanks for your input and sharing the success you had with the RCGF 21cc, I do believe I had a lemon. It was unfortunately was never reliable enough for me. Mostly my idle and throttle response were lacking.
Glad the video helped! The 21T sounds pretty good doesn’t it!!

Hi,

I got the H9 CC a little while ago, been workin' on it slowly. I was going to go with a 1-cyl rcgf 20cc, but after seeing a video or two on youtube, especially yours, decided to go with the rcgf twin of the same size. Seems to fit better and probably has a lot less vibration. Seems like they don't make that version that you had any more, but a Stinger version with angled spark plugs to reduce the width. Haven't got the engine yet, but I assume it's as good as the older version, if not maybe better.

Thanks for all the great details with your build, loved the humor with the cockpit gauges on your early post. Anyway, your build and comments have been an inspiration on my build. I got a little sad to hear that you don't have yours any more, but seems like you really liked it.

Thanks for the kind words! The stinger engines are made with new gravity castings for the cylinders. My old version had casting imperfections. So this is an improvement. Angled plugs are nice for fitting in a cowl, but actually produce a little less power than strait plugs.
As far as vibration, there wasn’t a huge noticeable difference if I remember correctly.
I hope yours doesn’t cause you any grief. Sure is a neat little twin!

Yeah, I'm not that crazy about the angled plugs either, like going with the tried and true, it's good to hear the casting is improved, but to be honest if the older version like yours were still available, I'd probably get one of those. "Improvements" always kinda worry me a little. The angled plugs do make it slightly narrower, but the plug ends are now ending up at a lower spot in the cowl, so the inward curve of the cowl makes the width in that spot a little less, and it seems like the engine to cowl clearance isn't much more than it was before as a result.

I think they did away with the external vacuum line for the carb pump too, at least I don't see a line on the new version, so maybe they are using internal carb suction for the carb pump like many other Walbro carbs do.

Your 21T setup just looked and sounded amazing in the video, even if the vibration may not be much less, the twin engine just looks so much more "realistic" and scale like than any other engine, and definitely than an electric motor. I'll try to post some pics as soon as I get that far.

I had some standard size analog servos, Hitec HS-311, I am using those for ail/flaps, just to avoid having to spend $25-30 on each servo. Do you think there will be any problem with those servos since everyone and the manual seem to suggest high torque or digital servos? They seem like they have enough torque, at least if I run them on 6V. I might use something a little more heavy duty on the elevator and rudder since those surfaces might see a little more load due to their larger areas/deflection.

Thanks again!
