I haven't flown my Timber w/Airtops yet. However the 8.5 Air Tops seem to be a good tire. A bit heavy but well built. If you can find (Fastrax 8mm X 12mm X 4mm Bearing FTBB23) they will fit the axel with a little shaving it down to <8mm . Or do like I did and find some 8mm round stock/bar and cut to length with 8mm collars on the outside.

The AirTops are 200mm or 7.9", I don't think they make a 8.5" tire. The axel you made, was that for the XCub Gear, or the stock gear? It's nice that they offer a 8x12x3.5mm bearing from TopModel if someone wanted to order a pair direct. Thanks for the link for another source, that will be helpful for others.

Let me review some of the wheel/tire options again:

8.75" PR Bushwheels - $125/pair - 1.2lbs/550g each - Unavailable Currently
8"/200mm AirTop -$90/pair - 1.23lbs/560g each - TopModel or Espirit -
10.3"/262mm PMT - $155/pair - 0.97lbs/440g each - PMT Premium Modell Technik (Germany)
7.75"/197mm PMT - $140/pair - 0.5lbs/225g each - PMT Premium Modell Technik (Germany)

I'd love to slap some 10" tires on... They are much bigger, 1/2lb lighter than the competitions 8-8.75" tires. It would give over an inch more of ground clearance. Price I posted reflects the removal of the 19% tax, and the conversion from Euro's to USD. They say international shipping is unavailable at the moment... maybe one could convince them. One of my favorite hobby stores has been attempting to get them to make him a US distributor.... I hope so! So honestly the only option right now is AirTops....

Thanks for the links like the German made one 197 mm diameter one. Look good but they are expensive, now if they are tough and last I would take serious look at them. Does anyone have a set of them.

None that I know of. But apparently they used to be a lighter rubber and they thickened the material to what your seeing now. The weight savings is significant than that of their competitors. It's a gamble with your wallet, but it may be worth it.
One thing I was just thinking of that bothers me is that with the 23X8 prop and xCub gear.... switching to skis is basically a no go. I would have to make my own extended gear legs or make 4"+ Standoffs. hmmmmm

Hey,
My Timber is still in the box. Screwed my back up in Feb. Hopefully I'll get started on it next month. I'll get some pictures of the axles and show ya what I'm talking about.
Thanks,
Gary

Finally covered the empennage back up. A little diagonal x brace and one cross beam seem to stiffen it up enough. The covering added a lot of rigidity but I don’t think the covering was designed to take this kind of load (twisting). This will suffice. I would say that this was an improvement.

Now if I only did an exoskeleton like Mike Patey and his scrappy cub....

3” tailwheel still in progress but it’s looking promising. I may get a 3.5”
to see if it fits. I’m getting greedy with this project. The stock wheel is pathetic compared to the 1.75” I replaced it with, then came the 2”... thought I was satisfied, but it drug in the sand pretty bad... here is my solution for now. Took 6 hours to print. First on was okay... but lacked some key features. This one is v6.3 ha ha ha. Lot of time drawing it up and tweaking it.
