Scale The Red Eagle rebooted

Well, I have been working on the logistics of the functional slave rod and think I have it. The control arm/aileron rib connection is only 5/8" from center of rotation but I think being made with carbon fiber it will be fine. Now I have to find some carbon fiber 1" x 24"+ to make them with.

In the pic the black arrows note the t/e sheeting which is kitted as balsa but it bows from the covering so I will use some of the extra light ply. The red arrows note spacing where I could place hardwood strips. The yellow notes how I could place light ply rib to rib and is what I think would be best.

You do recognize that you have to be parallel and the same orientation of the bottom aileron so that the ailerons move at the same angle.

Both ailerons, top and bottom, are identical and will get the same exact CF ribs. This will put them top to bottom in the same orientation.

I want to know if such a short moment is effective for this application. So before I go any further with this functional slave rod thing I am going to build a mock up to test it. I will make a rib/horn out of ply, hang weight near the t/e, and see how much energy it requires to move the servos rated weight. I don't want to be cutting out the wings t/e and making all the modifications needed just to find it is not feasible later, better to know before you go.

Anyone know someone that can cut some carbon fiber laminated sheets into some ribs? Laser or CNC I would think CNC to be the most feasible.

Question why does the push rod have to be ahead of the aileron pivot. It can be behind the pivot , that will make life a lot easier, and easier build and connect. Make the connection for the two ailerons at the same location as the servo is connected to the bottom ailerons. That is how I did it. Cannot get to my Skybolt right now to git a picture. The whole of Ontario is in state of emergency and nobody is allowed out of there homes. If you like a can make a sketch and send a picture.

No need for pics brother, I know exactly what your talking about.
My deal is scale, the rod is going in the scale location. It would be a breeze if it were in a position similar to a Waco, the trailing edge of the aileron, but it's not.

I ran the test with a mocked up 1/8" ply rib and it went very well. I still want to do a full mock up with two ribs spaced the same as the wings before I will go cutting up the wing. I want to know it is absolutely going to work and work appropriately. But before I can do that full size set-up test I want the carbon ribs. So if I can't find someone with a router to cut them relatively soon, as in today, I will order a sheet and do it the ole fashioned way.

On the test the ply rib was bending there was so much torque available and that was not even using where the servo is suppose to hook up which adds more leverage. But this also tells me I definitely want carbon fiber ribs, something near .080 like the kitted horns.

I think your main worry is slop aileron system, pretty sure the rod ends you selected will do the job, what are the hinges like?

Uh, don't have any pics so will just describe it. The aileron has a tube through the leading edge about a 1/2" back. It connects to the airframe with a rod through the wing, through the aileron, and the other side of the wing. There are composite attachments in two places (like a stationary horn) coming out of the wing t/e and into the aileron and the rod runs through them. It is a rather robust system, as it stands the only thing that may be the weak link is the carbon tube slave rods as one can only co so big and look appropriate. On the other Eagle nearly 100% of the time it flies on low rate which goes to 12°, 20° at middle, and 30° at high bit it has never seen high rates and I don't remember ever using mid rates. I know there is some inherent risk involved here that is why once I get the carbon sheet and make the ribs I will set up a test stand with the ribs, servos link, and slave rods all in the proper position and distance. If I don't get the warm and fuzzies I can always bail and throw the servos into the top wing. Been considering it anyway but I really like doing things different and there is nothing that brings more pleasure than making something work and work right. This may very well be one of those things that just can't be done though, we'll see.
