So the last couple of evenings I've been finishing the landing gear. After the epoxy and micro cured I block sanded it out and then went to work on making the wheel pant mounts.
I'm using the Sig wheel pant mounts for wire gear, two per side (an inner and an outer). I first made some hard points out of 1/8" lite ply and beveled the inside edges to match the curvature of the wheel pant.
I glued the hard points in with Epoxy and micro, then I used the mounts as a guide to drill the mount bolt holes. The mounts are then bolted to the inside of the pants using 2-56 cap head bolts and fiber lock nuts. I used the tapered grinding tool on the dremel to chamfer the top edge of the axel hole to accommodate the bend (where the leg becomes the axel).
I like the final result, it looks nice and clean and has a solid mount on both the inside and outside. Also, it doesn't move easily, but if it gets hit the wheel pant will move before they break.... Hopefully lol
Time to make some Slave Struts!
I making them out of some K&S Streamline brass with a 4-40 rod soldered to the inside leading edge, that way I really have a slave strut inside a slave strut.
First one made! I put 4-40 ball links on the ends and ground the streamline brass to an angle. It's a good strong connection, and perfectly free movement... Unfortunately I do have a slight issue.
The small issue I have is I got the top attach point to far forward on the aileron which has the geometry messed up. The top aileron has more down travel than the bottom aileron, to the point the top aileron bottoms out the hinge long before the bottom one does... I got a few fixes in mind I will try after I get the other side done, hopefully I don't have to cut the top ailerons apart but we will see.
Then again, I may just live with it, it really would just be built in differential lol
