I'm having some problems keeping my batteries from moving around. I fly mine on 4s (and like it) and I have to push the battery almost all the way into the motor box to make it balance. I've strengthened the box with some CF so it can take the forces. The problem is that I can only put a single strap at the very rear end of the battery. Sometimes when I do high-energy maneuvers, I can actually hear thuds from the battery moving around. Not good and a disaster waiting to happen.

Are there any tricks for better battery installation? Maybe SteveT has one of those inserts for this plane?

I'm sure he has does...

It seems to me that you're plane is tail heavy if you need the battery that far forward, mine was almost on the wingtube, with the same motor and a 6s 3300 that weighs the same as a 4s4000. Is your rudder servo on the tray or in that tail?

Yeah the rudder servo is on the tray with pull-pull. HS225MG all around, which should pretty much be the standard servo for this plane. Pushing the battery maybe 1/2" from being all the way into the motor box makes it balance on the tube and flies inverted with very little elevator input.

I bet you he'll say he's happy to make you a battery tray... But I'm convinced that isn't the solution you need, and you'll be paying to add more weight to your plane.

Have you located all your electronics and such as far forward in the fuse as possible? Doing this will allow you to move your batter back a little bit.

Sure, but the battery seems to come loose from the velcro when I'm doing tumbles and pop tops. I think the back is still held down by the strap, but the front flaps up. Scary, in any case!

Go to Home Depot, and buy the $3 pack of HEAVY DUTY Velcro brand strips. They come in packs of 2 complete strips about 8" long.
Put one FULL width on your tray, and one full width on the battery.
Then, go to RCDUDE and order the Medium size scorpion straps.
Problem solved, no extra wood box contraption or extra weight added.

Put one FULL width on your tray, and one full width on the battery.
Then, go to RCDUDE and order the Medium size scorpion straps.
Problem solved, no extra wood box contraption or extra weight added.

And if you really think you NEED a piece if wood to hold your battery in, just make 3 sided box out of Popsicle sticks and glue it down.

Not sure here, but Dad (willfly2) and I had the same problem batt forward issue with his 58" edge. He found an idea somewhere that used a paint mixing stick. Basically you cut the paint stick to length put velcro on the stick and in the plane, you create 'shoulders' on the front of the paint stick and then notch a small groove in the fire wall to make a snug fit. Then the battery get attached and velcroed to the stick and the stick gets inserted, strapped and velcroed to the plane. Its bomb-proof.

Gary: I am interested to know how you are getting CG with the battery at or near the wing tube here. We're using a Motrolfly 4315-7??, ZTW 100a Opto, and a CC BEC PRO all out on the nose and still having to put the battery that far forward. I would love to eliminate this wooden contraption for my Dad. Were setup pull-pull, maybe we should move the rudder servo back? Whats your setup here?

Don't move the servo back, you'll need even more weight at the nose to balance.
My setup was motrolfly 4315, 6s3300 pack, and HS-225mg servos. Battery was 1-2" from wingtube, plenty of room to center one large width strap around the battery. Velcro used as described above.
I fly my planes a pinch forward of neutral.

HAHA... Yeah... I guess that was a brain fart. I just don't understand this discrepancy, this is apparently an issue for others as well. How long are your motor extensions? Could that short distance make that much difference?

Yes, the farther forward you mount your motor, the closer the battery can be to the CG (wingtube area)
I think had 5/8" extensions, a wood prop, and a spinner, all of which provide some extra nose weight.
