Just a question to @Jetpainter. Please note all my painting has been with dope and then in later years switched to Stits. Never had a concer adout sanding open areas. Is this a problem with base coat and clear coat. Just trying to understand. Because when we do stits there is a brush coat and spray coat and then we apply the colour coat. When we do the brush coat we do two or three coats on the edges first sand the edges smooth and apply the spray coat this prevents us from sanding through to the cloth and get the Fuzzys. Note I have never had this happen ???????? . Please trying to get an understanding about base coat and clear coat because I would like to try it. Understand all this 2K primer and like it, been playing with it after you explaned it. Thanks.
I primed the surface to get rid of the "fabric look" and get rid of any line from the covering overlap. The 2K primer needs to be sanded to make the paint adhere and i just like to make the surface as smooth as possible, and it's easy to get carried away and sand to much, especially right at the edges of the open areas.

It's not really a basecoat thing, just trying to make the surface smooth.

If you wanted, you could just scuff up the primer with a scotchbrite pad to make the paint stick. Or you could go without the primer entirely, but you will have more of a fabric look.

Just for the record when I primed yesterday I used Nason 421-19 primer with 483-87 activator at a 4 to 1 mix. To that I added 7.5% DuPont 2350S flexible additive. I then added a little less than 10% Nason 441-21 reducer. The cured primer is very flat and smooth and not grainy at all. It should sand easy.

I took a photo of the rudder trying to show the surface of the primer in the light reflection.

I like 'em "BIG"!
I assembled the plane this afternoon so I could take some pictures to stare at for finalizing the scheme.

It's just my opinion for what it's worth, but I really think a major ARF manufacturer should be offering you a ton of dollars for that design. Truth be known, I would buy one right this minute if it were available. I think that design of yours is totally bad ass. You are the master.

Hell yes! Might be time for another "design a scheme" contest. :D
I have to agree...
