I have built my share of heavy planes in the past beefed up every thing then Fiberglas it filled the weave painted it and then clear coated it. This is many years back and as you said you need a little speed to land and take off. It is note a 3 D machine just a good flyer and it is bi-plane that looks good and flys with some character.I built a Sheber Pitts that was the same way. Everything was way to thick and in some areas to many parts. It does fly what most call heavy but to me it feels more scale like. In other words it will not take off in ten feet and has to be flown back to earth with some power/speed. I say go for it, you have nothing to lose and if the 30 is border line then go with the 35cc. Mine called for a 35cc ish and I went with a 55cc twin, love the plane.
