OK! Got it out and mounted to a clamped 2x4 and got the YS 61 fired up! No need to start cutting the header in because the test run determined that a new con rod, piston and ring will be needed to get running good. Engine makes the louder than normal clanky sound and not very much compression when the engine is warm. Idle will not hold no matter what regulator setting. So will be ordering parts.

Harbor freight has these on sale. I bought some for my garage to hang planes out of the way. They are only $8.99 here is a example pic of a local hobby shop using one.

Boy...It's been such a long time (23 years!) since I last ran this motor. Come to find out, or refresh my memory rather, the 61 s has a "lapped" piston and sleeve assembly. I slightly sanded the copper shim in the head and thoroughly cleaned the engine. The diaphragm was completely missing! (forgot about that too!) but a buddy happened to have one. (yes the engine ran without the diaphragm!). I contacted YS directly and they no longer have any support on this engine other than (minor support) some ringed heli versions. So a new conrod is out but the original is still OK for a another 5 or 6 gallons. Any way got the header cut for an APC 12x7 prop with the stand. MACS 2801 header is 10" long stock. Cut it to 8.5" for a very respectable 12,200 rpm! with a Rossi pipe. This is with an ever slightly rich setting and 30% nitro. Hobby King had a racer cat 60 (old classic pattern plane) so that is where the 61 will call home. Going to see how the "old" measures up to the new DZ 70 which is an awesome little motor! I currently swing an APC 12x10 over 11,000 with it!

IMAC FANATIC

40% happier than most folks.
Bout to do the same with an O.S 90 4 stroke, hasnt been run in 10+ years. No airframe in mind... yet.
Everyone needs a glo frame to keep it fun.

Have been "under the weather" literally and not able to take advantage of some really nice flying weather that showed itself so just piddled with a "new test" stand for the "mighty" old YS 61s.
