    Scale Plans built P-51

I measured every direction that I could imagine. From the tips to the fuselage sides was within 1/16th. From the tip to the ground is equal. I measured diagonally from the wing tips to a central point on the very end of the fuselage. This was my biggest area of discrepancy. There was a...

    Scale Plans built P-51

I tried to include a picture of the entire plane, but the plane is too big, or my shop is too small. I choose to believe the latter.

Haven't done much sanding at this point, but I'm happy with the results so far.

Here's the pictures that I promised earlier today. This the first pic since I mounted the wing. Looks like one of the racers with the wing tip sections removed.

Yep! I can actually see it coming together pretty quickly now. I ordered some servo extensions from 3D Hobby Parts. They sell a 20g, twisted extension with gold plated connectors for about $4. Those go in the wings along with the servos, then more sheeting. A couple of days off from work...

    Scale Plans built P-51

Big news! The top of the wing center action is sheeted and I have it sitting on the fuselage. Everything is lined up just right and I'm ready to put the dowels in the back and the mounting bolts in the front of the wing. I never measure and cut something this critical in the same work...

The wing panel separated nicely and slides on with a nice fit. Now I think I can build the control surfaces!!

Here's the bottom of the left wing panel.

    Scale Plans built P-51

Here's the right wing panel separated from the main center section. By installing the wing tube and anti-rotation pins before cutting it apart, I made sure that everything lined up the first time.

Ok, I haven't built the flaps and ailerons yet because as I cut out the outline I realized that there was more that I needed to do to the wings themselves. I need to cut the outer panels off first to make it easier to fit the control surfaces. So, there was lots to do.

Good point, and one that I, for one, tend to forget. We get hung up on trying to match our numbers with the manufacturer, and don't trust our own judgement. There's a case for on board telemetry.

From what I've seen from running mine, I would be afraid to try to get another 1000 rpm out of it. I know it won't turn my 26x8 anywhere near that fast. Being a convert to the Redline 40:1 club, and new to this engine, I think the 6400 that I'm getting is just about right.

Going to build the flaps and ailerons this weekend. I'll take pictures along the way and let everyone see how it's going.

I finished the sheeting of the upper part of the fuselage last night. Now it's time to mount the wing. It may take me 3 days just to get everything measured and set up right. But, it's getting closer.

Reza has been here for a week and he's already giving stuff away! RED LINE OIL!

It'll be interesting to see the results. I just sold all the Amsoil that I had, and put Redline in everything I own. I'm about to order the 17 quarts it takes to change the oil in my Chevy HD.

Is anybody getting the 7500 rpm that the manual suggests? Perhaps we should be reading that as a redline number instead of an expected performance number. Any thoughts?

It's not as bad as I expected, but this is the biggest single piston engine I've ever used and didn't really know what to expect. I'm using the vibration mount just as it came out of the box.
